Heavy rainfall has led to the postponement of two more League of Ireland games – and there could be more cancellations ahead of tonight’s fixtures.
Shelbourne were due to host Shamrock Rovers at Tolka Park, however heavy rainfall meant that a pitch inspection was scheduled for noon.
It was confirmed after that inspection that the surface was unplayable.
Earlier on Friday, after an inspection of the pitch at Richmond Park, it was ruled that the game between St Patrick’s Athletic and Galway United would have to be called off.
Statements from the two host clubs, and from the League of Ireland, confirmed the outcomes of the two inspections.
“The League of Ireland can confirm that the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division game between Shelbourne and Shamrock Rovers has been postponed,” read the post from the league office.
“A pitch inspection took place at Tolka Park following heavy rainfall and the pitch was deemed to be unplayable.
“A date for the rescheduled fixture will be announced in due course.”
Shels posted: “Following a pitch inspection in Tolka Park today, our Men’s Premier Division tie with Shamrock Rovers scheduled for tonight has been postponed.
“A date for the rescheduled fixture will be announced in due course and tickets purchased for tonight will be valid for the rescheduled fixture.”
St Patrick’s Athletic also notified fans of the postponement.
“Tonight’s League of Ireland game against Galway United has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
“Richmond Park underwent a pitch inspection this morning & is unplayable after the persistent rain.
“New details for the fixture will be announced in due course & tickets purchased for tonight will be valid for the rescheduled match.”
Meanwhile, following a pitch inspection at Sullivan & Lambe Park, the game between Drogheda United and Waterford WILL go ahead.
