In a bold move to take Spain’s biggest comedy franchise to the world, Film Factory has secured international sales rights to “Torrente for President,” created, directed and starring Santiago Segura as the perpetually drunk, self-centered sexist, and racist scumbag ex-cop Torrente.
Hitting Spain in 1998 with “Torrente, the Dumb Arm of the Law,” hailed by Variety as “deliriously non p.c.” and “a tremendously enjoyable comedy-thriller,” the franchise has punched over 16 million admissions in Spain – over $100 million – making it the highest-grossing series in the history of Spanish cinema.
When “Torrente” first bowed, he was regarded as a hilarious parody of a throw back to the times of dictator Francisco Franco, a past which most Spaniards disavowed in a modern democratic Spain. These days, however, there are more urgent and immediate references.
