Turkish opposition backs Erdogan over Greek island claims

  1. > The Turkish opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has expressed its agreement with the recent government escalation vis-à-vis Greece and indicated that it would support President Recep Tayyip Erdogan if he decided to go through with a threat to challenge the sovereignty of Greek islands in the eastern Aegean.

    > “If you have the heart for it, take the step on the occupied and armed islands. We will support you,” CHP chief Kemal Kilicdaroglu

    > “It is imperative that we increase the pressure in the Mediterranean and the Aegean,” he said.

There he goes again. Extreme chauvinism, expansionism and revisionism on CHP’s part.

  2. Erdogan is the tip of the iceberg, Turkish policy doesn’t belong to the 21st or even 20th century.
Sweden and Finland just got a glimpse of how it is to negotiate with Turks…

People should understand that the main problems will not change if Erdogan leaves. To see real progress Turks should focus less on nationalism, expansionism and short term power plays and focus more on building trust inside and outside of Turkey….

  3. *”Don’t worry guys. Erdogan will be gone soon. The opposition is ahead in the polls. Things will change”*.

People who expect a change with a change in government in Turkey are in for a surprise.

  4. The election next year merely decides how bad a shit show Turkey will continue to be, actual improvement seems to be a pipe dream.

  5. Nothing too surprising there: most political differences within any country are over domestic issues, it’s rare to see a significant difference when it comes to foreign policy.

What I think is interesting, is that the CHP is basically calling Erdogan’s bluff- they have to know that such an attempt to challenge Greek sovereignty would fail and incur serious damage to Turkey in the process. Turkey is already under sanctions; the last thing Turkey needs is for NATO to come up with a mechanism to expel them for attacking Greece (which could be as simple as the rest of the alliance’s 29 members holding a vote on the matter)

Rather than letting Erdogan talk about Greece and then get credit from the electorate simply by creating tension, the CHP encouragement basically puts Erdogan in the unenviable position of having to commit political capital to a venture that is risky and unlikely to bear fruit or disappoint the nationalist voters.

Erdogan can’t compete on the domestic stage, and by “endorsing” him they’ve basically raised expectations from the nationalist voters for genuine results- results which he cannot realistically deliver. Maybe nationalist Turks will vote for Erdogan after he brings some sort of humiliation upon Turkey when his Greek gamble fails, but that is a big maybe.
