MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — The Public Service Commission of West Virginia has received an application from both the Monongahela Power Company and The Potomac Edison Company to construct a new natural gas plant, along with three solar generation facilities.
An email from the Public Service Commission states that the two companies are seeking approval to build a 1,200-megawatt (MW) combined cycle natural gas plant, which as proposed would cost $2.84 billion and would be built at the Fort Martin Power Station in Monongalia County.
If approved, the plant would open in late 2031, construction would bring in roughly $258.5 million in tax revenue, and would contribute $51.1K annually after.

In addition to the plant, the companies are also asking to build three solar facilities, one at the Wylie Ridge site in Weirton, one at the Davis site in Davis, and one at the Valley Point site near Albright. Those facilities plan to be functional by 2027, 2028, and 2030.
“According to the filing, the companies state the combined projects are intended to address energy deficits and reduce potential capacity shortfalls while supporting reliable electric service,” the Public Service Commission states in the email.
More information on the proposed plant and solar facilities can be found here under case number 26-0108-E-CN.
