Apply that same logic to alcohol and the country would grind to a halt.
As usual in this country, its a fucking joke of a set-up
Is a drug driving conviction a drugs conviction or a road traffic conviction does anyone know? Like for the purposes of having to declare it on things
Great to see a legal professional state this in a video, but in the long-run it means fuck all. The police in this country are corrupt and morally bankrupt. They love the ease of conviction of drug driving as it is an easy way to meet their quotas. Same reason they’d rather sting 16 year olds for drinking cans or smoking a joint as opposed to stopping actual serious crime – low risk/high yield. This **will not** change in this country until there is major drug reform, which will likely not happen for a long, long time.
it’s fucking disgraceful that you could smoke a spliff in say Amsterdam a place it’s legal to smoke. Go to bed wake up have a breakfast hop on a plane come home go to bed and get stopped on the way to work the following day after providing a sample which results in you losing your license and possibly career. No one is condoning drug driving but fuck me folks you should be able to have a spliff the night before watching shite or playing xbox and not have to worry about being stopped.
Then what’s even funnier and scarier about the whole situation is you have the association of garda sargents and inspectors saying members can’t be tested without providing a reason. But yet it’s okay for a garda to ask anyone to provide a sample if they stop them at one of these checkpoints. Regardless of whether the garda suspects the civilian to be intoxicated or not. I mean these cunts don’t even test themselves before getting behind the wheel of a car.
You know a driving law is bullshit when all the ads about it focus on the legal penalties rather than the actual real-life consequences.
Time to swap out the cannabis for the more time efficient cocaine then I guess!! /s
Make randomised drug tests among the gardai and politicians mandatory, I don’t want them performing their duties while possibly having something in their system
Drugs are bad.
At times for work I drive a truck. This gives me a better view into the oncoming cars. The amount of people texting while driving would shock you, a more dangerous offence with a much lesser penalty. I’m at risk today of losing my licence because I vaped some cannabis on Sunday evening. I’ve never had a parking ticket or a penalty point, I’m an exceptionally safe driver. As a country we really need to grow up. Laws and gardai should be there to make people safe, not ruin livelihoods for the benefit of statistics. The limits have been plucked from the sky and have no basis on impairment.
He never mentioned mushrooms. So am I ok to drive while tripping balls 🤔
I’m all for decriminalising all drugs but driving while under the influence is going to be the big stumbling block. Whoever develops a test that can determine if a drug in someone’s system is “active” (and therefore under the influence), then that’s the point I think we should just drop drug prohibition.
The reason why the drinking age in the USA is 21 is because they’ve so much cars.
I had a thought the other day.
You know when the Gardaí report a seizure of xMillion in cannabis. I would love if they were asked how much is left to seize, like “fair play lads, ye found 100kg, so how much is left? When will ye have seized it all? Ye’ve been at this for years, seizing all round you, big bits, small bits, butts of spliffs, artic lorries etc. When will ye be done? How much is left to seize?”
It’s not going to stop. We are paying these people to play cat and mouse. Infuriating.
This must be the so-called “_more compassionate approach to helping people who use drugs_” minister Feighan was referring to. Arresting people for driving under the influence when they are not under the influence. This is the sort of idiocy one could expect out of an authoritarian banana republic.
This country is so backwards at times
I personally know a fella, maybe 2 years back so late 20’s at the time, who was stopped at a checkpoint on a Tuesday and the Garda asked him had he smoked over the weekend and my boy said yes and the Garda ushered him on.
So it’s common knowledge within the Gardai that they are wrecking people’s lives for zero reason. This lad obviously didn’t want to risk wrecking my mates life when he was on just on his way to work.
So what is the window for the initial saliva test? They kind of mention you could fail a saliva test 3 days or even a week later but don’t give a window for it like they did for the urine/blook/hair tests
They just want the legal right to be able to fuck you anyway they choose
“it won’t be affecting your senses or nervous system but you could still be arrested.”
I’m not the only one who sees the problem with this?
There needs to be a device in all cars that scan the drivers brain. If the scan detects bad thoughts then the car is disabled indefinitely.
Whoever comes up with an actual portable impairment test will be minted.
This was by design. It’s not even wilful ignorance. The government know that they’re putting sober drivers off the road and they’re ok with it because they designed it that way. It’s wrong on every level but until we grow up and have a serious conversation about drugs in this country, nothing will change.
If an individual is willing to break the law to consume cannabis, they’re probably willing to risk a driving ban, too. And if you’re a regular user, you basically run the same risk of a driving ban whether you drive stoned or not.
How exactly is this about road safety? The only message that sends is “fuck it, might as well have a spliff”.
This law is 100% about anti drugs than safe driving.
How does it work for driving in countries who have legalised cannabis use?
I had a friend who was stopped recently, he had smoked the night before (as he does every night) but it did not show up on his test. There must be quite a variance between people.
Does anyone know what the average time ranges are on average for different substances?
As others have said, driving impaired should be punished. Driving with metabolites in your system should not, in my opinion.
This is mad that someone can be convicted for something they had in their system 3 days ago.
For those who asked they say there is a limit off 10 ng/ml which your typically below after 6 hours…. however, they do note it’s actually really not always the case. For chronic or high doses you could be looking at longer time periods and every case can be different. (link above)
TBH if you have a smoke I reckon waiting at least 24 hours before driving. Or even better have this changed that for the sake of cannabis just have a simple sobriety test before saliva test.
So basically your better doing coke all weekend than having a hike and smoke with your pal at the weekend.
Our drug laws need to change , prohibition does nothing good.
Is there anything we can do to just change this?
like a petition or something?
Ah yes punishing drivers for being intoxicated when their not actually intoxicated… Totally logical… Ffs
Unless we legalise drugs there would be no reason to change this.
Why would it matter for them to be able to check if you smoked weed 5 mins before being pulled over or an hour before or a week before. If you partake in smoking weed you fund crime. They are more than happy to punish you and have no reason to adjust how accurately the stuff needs to be.
If we can actually just legalise the stuff real change will happen. They will then need to implement a test to tell how recently you smoked and if the substance is active in your system.
Yep thats retarted ! having a spliff the night before you go to work in no way affects your ability to drive , Dumb laws as usual
What happened to innocent until proven guilty? If the courts attempt to prosecute you for having cannabis in your system even though the psychoactive effects are long since finished then surely the onus is on them to prove you are intoxicated and are impaired? We are sliding inexorably towards a police state. The presence of cannabis in the system proves nothing. Your sobriety or otherwise should be deduced by way of a roadside reactions test. If you pass your good to drive, if you fail you’re fucked.
Complaining about how bad it is on reddit will achieve absolutely nothing. Email your local TD and put pressure on them. That’s what they are there for, if they don’t agree with you, tell them they have lost your vote. Name and shame said politician.
That’s the only language they understand.
What’s morally right or what’s unfair does not factor into their decision making.
How about we random drug test the gards who are driving the squad carsvthe day they are doing patrol, so let’s say Thomas the guard smoked a joint on the Sunday and got into the squad car on the Wednesday he should be breathalysed to see if there is any presence of drugs in his system we’ll see how quick the law changes when the law finds out that they consume drugs just as much as the common people do.
A 17-year old teenager can kick the shit out of somebody until they lapse into a coma no criminal record no nothing , but if I get caught with cannabis in my system after smoking a joint 24-hours previously I get a criminal record for the rest of my life
And to rub salt into the wound, so what you’re telling me is if I smoked a joint 3 days ago and there are trace amounts in my system yet I am completely Stone Cold sober I will get the exact same criminal charge and conviction as if I had just smoke a joint 20 minutes ago and hopped into the car stoned out of my head…..how in gods name does that make any fucking sense
Imagine the market for legalised weed in Ireland! Talk about Celtic Tiger II. The yanks’d have *such* a boner for it. “Yeah lads, come in, come in. I’ve CollinsCollieweed at €20 a gram then there’s the Bantry Bay bud & Waterford Wowie at 25’s and you’ve the Killer Killarney & Belfast Black hash at 30s.” Id have a dispensary just for them near the airport called “Forty Shades of Green” (taking $s of course) with ~~some poor little midget cunt~~ a vertically challenged fella dressed up & sitting outside smoking a pipe. Couple of vape lounges too- ‘Toke of the Town’ & ‘Bud-U-Like’.
You’d need to be a regular/heavy smoker to flag a urine test after 30 days

I know a few Garda who are mad for coke.
If an individual is willing to break the law to consume cannabis, they’re probably willing to risk a driving ban, too. And if you’re a regular user, you basically run the same risk of a driving ban whether you drive stoned or not.
