Olympics news, live updates: U.S. handles Germany in men’s hockey; Mikaela Shiffrin finishes 11th in giant slalom

For a team that comfortably won all three of its group-stage games to secure a bye to the Olympic men’s hockey quarterfinals, the U.S. will head to the knockout round with plenty of questions to answer.

The Americans weren’t as convincing as expected against a feeble group with no other credible medal threats.

A 5-1 victory over Germany on Sunday night served as a small step in the right direction. The U.S. finally seized control of the game in the latter two periods after being held scoreless for nearly the entire opening session.

Another game, another dominant effort from Team USA. The red, white and blue beat Germany 5-1 to clinch Group C. Quarterfinal matchups begin Tuesday.

Germany gets a chance, but their power play is unsuccessful as it comes down to the wire in this game.

With 8:38 remaining in the third period, Germany finally breaks through with a goal from Tim Stutzle, assisted by John Peterka.

Following controversies involving double-touching stones in matches on Day 8 of the 2026 Winter Olympics, World Curling has made changes to its umpiring setup for the remainder of the men’s and women’s round-robin and playoff sessions.

On Saturday, Canada skip Rachel Homan had her first stone pulled in a match against Switzerland. Officials were asked why the call couldn’t be reviewed by video, but World Curling rules don’t allow for that during a match.

Great Britain’s Bobby Lammie had a stone removed during Sunday’s match versus Germany for the same reason. He appeared to be shocked by the ruling.

After consulting with the national committees of teams competing in the Winter Olympics, umpires will now only monitor player deliveries at the hog line upon a team request. Otherwise, the two umpires would be available during a match but not step in to rule on such a play because it wasn’t possible to have an official stationed at each of the four hog lines.

Team USA is rolling, adding another goal less than two minutes into the third period. Tage Thompson took a pass from Dylan Larkin and sent it straight into the net.

Speed skater Jutta Leerdam may be known to many as Jake Paul’s fiancée, making her a social media sensation. But if she isn’t already, Leerdam should be known as a two-time Olympic medalist after earning silver in Sunday’s 500 meters race.

Leerdam was a surprising finisher behind fellow Dutch skater Femke Kok. Perhaps that shouldn’t have been unexpected after the six-time World champion won gold in the 1,000 meters event and set an Olympic record.

The 500 meters race also drew attention among American fans for USA’s Erin Jackson finishing fifth after she went into the event expected to contend for a medal.

Zach Werenski gets called for slashing and Germany will get an advatage nearly halfway into the second period.
