Tesla Inc.’s newest vehicle — the purpose-built robotaxi known as Cybercab — has rolled off the production line for the first time at Gigafactory Texas.
The Austin automaker touted the milestone Tuesday when it triumphantly posted a picture of employees in hardhats surrounding the vehicle.
CEO Elon Musk gave kudos to staff, responding to his company’s tweet on X: “congratulations to the Tesla team on making the first production Cybercab!”
The achievement arrives with prototypes having been spotted on busy Austin streets and highways, some with features such as steering wheels and side mirrors. During the unveiling of the Cybercab in October 2024, Musk had promised that the car would be made without a steering wheel or control pedals. He reiterated that a day earlier.
The picture Tesla provided of the first Cybercab off the line in Austin doesn’t offer a clear enough glimpse to know if Musk’s autonomous vision for the vehicle was fulfilled. But the Cybercab’s final design is expected to come into view in April, when Tesla aims to further its production of the gold two seater.
The rapidly approaching deadline is being tightly watched, as Tesla has previously built up anticipation for its vehicles ahead of an actual ramp up in production. In July 2023, Tesla said that its first Cybertruck had been produced, though the vehicle didn’t actually begin deliveries to customers until the end of November 2023.
