QUINCY — A Tuesday night’s League of Women Voters of Adams County candidate forum, the four people hoping to be the Democrat’s choice to unseat Rep. Mary Miller (R-Ill. 15) say should they win and the Democrats take over the U.S. House of Representatives, they would vote to impeach President Donald Trump for a third time.

Jennifer Todd, Kyle Nudo, Paul Davis and Randy Raley are running for the Democratic nomination in the Illinois 15th Congressional District. They all hope to unseat Republican Mary Miller.

Trump was impeached twice by the House of Representatives during his first term (2017–2021): first in 2019 for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress regarding Ukraine, and second in 2021 for incitement of insurrection following the January 6 Capitol riot. He was acquitted by the Senate in both trials.

The president himself is aware of such a possibility. Speaking to a group of fellow Republicans at a Washington D.C. retreat last month, Trump stressed the importance of keeping control of the chamber, where his party has a razor-thin majority, which is in jeopardy with the upcoming November midterm elections.

“You’ve got to win the midterms because, if we don’t win the midterms, it’s just going to be — I mean, they’ll find a reason to impeach me,” the president said. “I’ll be impeached.”

He reiterated that sentiment on Fox’s the Will Cain show last month as well.

The House can impeach the president and other officials for misconduct, including “treason, bribery or other high crimes and misdemeanors”. An impeached president would then stand trial in the Senate, which can convict and remove him from office with a two-thirds vote.
