Israeli President Isaac Herzog said he hopes for an end to the current leadership in Iran and its allies in the region and at the same time wished the Iranian people all the best for Ramadan, the Muslim holiday that started on Wednesday.
“I truly hope and pray that this reign of terror will end and that we will see a different era in the Middle East,” Herzog said during a visit to the US-led Civil Military Coordination Centre (CMCC) in southern Israel.
The centre is supposed to monitor the ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian militia Hamas, according to Herzog’s office.
He conveyed his best wishes to the people of Iran for the start of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. Israel has previously expressed its solidarity and support for the Iranian people in the recent protests on several occasions.
“The Iranian regime has butchered and slaughtered tens of thousands of Iranians in recent weeks,” the Israeli president reportedly said.
“They have clearly employed a ruthless regime all over Iran, causing huge suffering.”
At the beginning of January, Iran’s security apparatus brutally crushed mass protests in the country. According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), more than 7,000 people lost their lives.
Israel sees the Islamist leadership in Tehran as an existential threat with its possible plans to produce nuclear weapons. Tehran denies pursuing such goals.
Last June, Israel waged war against Iran for 12 days and, together with the United States, bombed key nuclear facilities. Iran responded with a heavy rocket bombardment aimed at Israeli cities.
