For the first time since 2014, when the definition of Non-Performing Loans (NPLs) was harmonised across the European Union (EU), the NPL ratio in Cyprus has fallen below the corresponding EU average at the end of December 2025, at 1.6%, according to data released by the Central Bank of Cyprus.

As of the end of December 2025, the NPL ratio of the banking sector, excluding loans and advances to Central Banks and Credit Institutions declined to 3.2%, compared with 4.5% at the end of September 2025.

The NPL ratio, as per the methodology applied in the European Banking Authority’s (EBA) Risk Dashboard, i.e. including loans and advances to Central Banks and Credit Institutions, declined to 1.6% at the end of December 2025, compared with 2.3% at the end of September 2025.

“For the first time since 2014, when the definition of Non-Performing Loans (NPLs) was harmonised across the European Union (EU), the NPL ratio in Cyprus has fallen below the corresponding EU average, which stood at 1.8% as of September 2025”, CBC notes.

NPLs at the end of December stood at €834 million in a total of €52 billion of loans and advances. In September 2025 NPLs stood at €1,173 million in a total of €50 billion of loans and advances.

Of the €834 million in NPLs, households accounted for €487 million, while non-financial corporations accounted for €317 million, including €288 million from SMEs.

Τhe coverage ratio of NPLs with provisions decreased to 62,3% at the end of December 2025, compared with 68,5% at the end of September 2025.

Total restructured loans at the end of December 2025 amounted to €0,8 bn, out of which loans of €0,3 bn continue to be classified as NPLs.
