# **What are we talking about?**

*From [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_basic_income):*

> Universal basic income (UBI) is a sociopolitical financial transfer policy proposal in which all citizens of a given population regularly receive a legally stipulated and equally set financial grant paid by the government without a means test

*If you prefer a video*, Kurzgesagt’s [Universal Basic Income Explained](https://youtube.com/watch?v=kl39KHS07Xc) explains it more in depth.

Basically, *if you feel like you don’t have enough time for yourself or for the activities and people you care about*, that your time at work is often wasted, if you struggle to make ends meet with the money you make or that 8 working hours per day are too much, *UBI could make our life easier and more enjoyable*.

# Q&A

Q: **Where can I sign?** ✍️

A: *Link at the end of the post.*

Q: **What’s an ECI?**

A: It stands for European Citizen Initiative. In short, it’s an *official collection of signatures* that allows EU citizens to propose new laws to the European Commission.

Q: **How does it differ from sites like change.org?**

A: *It is an official and regulated mechanism* that can’t be ignored by the European Commission, unlike any other petitions site.

Q: **There’s no way we’ll reach the set goal in 3 weeks, why should I sign?**

A: Never say never; we’re posting in every European subreddit. *If you think UBI should be experimented but you won’t sign, how will people ever know?*

Q: **Why should I trust you?**

A: *Don’t.* Resources have been linked so you can inform yourselves and form your own opinion.

  1. We had socialism here for decades, we don’t buy this shit anymore.

UBI doesn’t solve the problem of poverty, it only obfuscates it.

  2. We can have universal basic income when we create AI that will take care of our production and human labor will be obsolete.

  3. I have universal basic income from my parents and it’s not going well. UBI is a mental health problems creator appart from being an already implemented idea. It’s called welfare.

  4. Hey OP, bringing up universal income in a sub for Slovakia is certainly a courageous step, but a real miss I’m afraid. Slovaks have been kind of traumatized by what they think is socialism in the previous regime before 1989. So to compensate, Slovakia has become a hyper-capitalist country where money is king and businessmen rule everything.

  5. It’s nice in theory, bad in practice. If everyone makes guaranteed basic income, fixed costs will just inflate. E.g. (simplified example) someone is renting above average flat for 1000€ and UBI is now also 1000€. Everyone can afford above average flat, isn’t that nice? No. Since everyone can afford it, demand will rise so much that prices will double so people who could afford it for 1000€ before can still afford it for the same 1000€ plus another 1000€ from UBI.

Other problem is that how you set it across EU? Every country has different UBI? Then people from expensive countries would just migrate to cheaper ones inflating local prices even further.

Would it be same in the whole EU? Then it would be useless in more expensive countries and for poor countries it could bring temporary benefit followed by either huge wave of job quits or big inflation. Both would ruin poor countries economically even further.

Like I consider myself tilted more to the center-left, but I’d rather prefer good targeted financial help rather than UBI.

  6. Nice. So I’ve got two jobs because somehow I figured if I want more money I need to work more. Then comes state which come and take taxes of my earnings for which, as not married and childless, I only get destroyed roads and healthcare balancing above the abyss. And then come someone who figured that for getting more money he will not work more but instead start petition because 8 working hours per day is too much, struggles to make ends meet with the money he makes and need more time for himself.
Looking forward to finding third job to pay for it as I presume money will not start magically appear randomly and state will start taking even more taxes from my earnings.
Have it ever occurred to you that if you want more money you could start working more? Or that nobody is obliged to supply you with money just because you want?

  7. Nah, we don’t need UBI, Bitcoin already solves the issues the modern euro, USD, RUB, GBP or any other currency that isn’t covered by physical means, like gold or silver, is failing to solve.

Don’t vote for solutions that make a problem worse, look for changes that already exist and work in the first place.

UBI would be a good back-up if all else fails. Creating a ever-inflating market of unvaluable assets, the end of monetary system, thus the whole loan/credit system, and a norm for not working, where work is premium, not obligatory, and thus a society becomes pointless, because individuals cannot contribute to the common goal society is trying to solve. It’s a deep hole of issues, and its implementation will be difficult, near-impossible. Unless, of course, the right people dump their money onto it.

One point I must give, Kurzgesagt made a great video about how would UBI work, I would recommend watching it to anyone.

  8. We do not need UBI. Maybe we could implement some kind of a similar system to help for example young people to start they lives after ending high school to motivate them to move out of parents house. Something like they have in Denmark which is called SU(idk the long name) which is basically a monthly scholarship when you study at university and work at least 43hours per month.
