PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The Department of Transportation has ordered more than 550 driving schools across the country to shut down for alleged safety failures, including four schools in Arizona.
The Arizona schools are run by PSV CDL Training LLC, Tuba City Unified School District, Clarkdale-Jerome Elementary School and City of Show Low.
The owner of PSV CDL Training, which has a school in Coolidge, said this is a big misunderstanding and that he is complying with the federal government. He pushed back over any safety concerns, saying he is still open and will get to the bottom of this.
Investigators found some of the schools employed unqualified instructors, failed to adequately test students and had other safety issues.
The Department of Transportation has been aggressively going after states that handed out commercial driver’s licenses to immigrants who shouldn’t have qualified for them ever since a fatal crash in August.
Many large training schools support making trucking safer, including 160 Driving Academy, which has a number of schools in Arizona.
“There’s over 100,000 truck accidents in this country due to heavy trucks and 5,000 fatalities,” said Steve Gold of 160 Driving Academy. “This is a question of safety because all those states have been really lax in how they’re looking over their training providers and looking over how they’re issuing these commercial driver’s licenses.”
The American Trucking Association is endorsing this effort as well.
President Donald Trump has threatened to withhold federal funding from states that don’t clean up their commercial driver’s license program. Illinois is the latest state that could lose more than $100 million.
