Irish families are spending four times as much on junk food as they are on vegetables

  1. Yeah, it’s bad. Gave up processed sugar altogether after I invested in getting my teeth fixed. Sugar is an entirely legal substance causally linked to more cases of fatty liver disease, obesity, cancer or heart disease than almost any other substance. Friendly reminder Cannabis is still illegal, but they wrap sugar up in brightly coloured packages and sell it to Children.

  2. Even veg’s in ready made meals can be unhealthy if they’re smothered in sauces. It’s as much about convenience as junk food versus healthy eating.

  3. I love me some junk food and I love vegetables but its so much easier to buy a ton of junk food than it is with Veg. The junk food lasts so much longer (*well in theory, I’m a hungry fat bastard*).

  4. Well yeah. They’re easier to down, and require little to no effort to cook. Also easier on the tastebuds than the aul veg too. Gonna take a lot to convert people from having Tayto or Chips to boiling the aul spud.

  5. That maybe explain the obesity rate in Ireland!
    I love to look at people basket in supermarket as it tells a lot about the person, and god it’s scary the amount of shitty food people are buying

  6. A big fave in our house is fried rice. Really, really quick and a great way to get loads of veggies in as well as using up any random bits in the fridge.

    Eggs;
    Soy sauce;
    Sesame oil;
    Spring onion/regular onion;
    Meat, if you have it;
    Carrots;
    Peas (frozen);
    Sweetcorn (frozen);
    Rice (we use the microwavable rice in a pinch)

    We fry it til it gets crispy on the bottom and sometimes throw a fried egg on top. Really delicious and my two kids absolutely love it. Takes 15 mins to make.

    Edit: clarification

  7. Healthy food is too expensive, and takes too much time, seems to be mentioned a lot.
    It’s not and it can be done quickly.
    A quick Google search will get loads of results.
    The problem is we have all become used to convince. It takes a change of lifestyle. Unfortunately we’re flooded with advertising for junk foods, not for fresh healthy foods. Everyone wants the easier option, and usually takes it. Nobody’s doing anything wrong we’re all human taking the easy way out, but the rewards for the extra little bit of effort really pays off.
