X will not support cryptocurrency trading within its application with its Smart Cashtags feature, the social media platform’s head of product says.
“X is not handling trade execution or acting as a brokerage,” Nikita Bier said on Feb. 14 on X. “Just building the financial data tools and links.”
Bier’s remarks came in response to speculation following a post that day in which he said Smart Cashtags would enable users “to trade stock and crypto directly from [the app’s] timeline.” In that post, he also said the feature is set to launch “in a couple of weeks.”

Bier first announced the Smart Cashtags feature on Jan. 11, promising to link tickers to real-time price data and mentions on the platform. The initial mockups shared by Bier showed “Sell” and “Buy” buttons, raising questions of whether X would partner with an exchange.
Neither Bier nor X could be reached for comment by Benzinga.

X owner Elon Musk in an xAI employee meeting last week said the long-promised X-integrated digital payments platform “X Money” was being beta tested internally and is set for limited public testing “in the next month or two.”
Last June, then-X CEO Linda Yaccarino told the Financial Times that the platform would eventually support in-app trading and investment alongside a branded debit card.
