Anyone could have printed out that letter. If this had really been going on for two weeks don’t you think the SA embassy would’ve complained by now? There’d be a warning to tourists posted on the DFA website?
Could lack of a biometric passport be the reason. I’ve heard of other people being grilled about their passport because it wasn’t biometric

My wife works with a South African lady. She flew out to SA two weeks ago and came back a week ago and she had no issues at all, no tests nor anyone questing her passport.
