Safeguarding the European Union’s monetary sovereignty and completing the Savings and Investments Union are the two top priorities that Eurogroup president and Greece’s finance minister, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, emphasized at the Eurogroup and ECOFIN councils in Brussels, as he noted in a video of his statements at the meetings, which he posted on social media on Thursday.
He commented in the video that it is “existential for us to safeguard the role of the euro as it is quite pertinent for the EU’s monetary sovereignty.” As he noted, the main topics were economic developments in Europe, the international role of the euro, global macroeconomic imbalances and completing the Savings and Investments Union.
Pierrakakis stressed the need for a united European response to global macroeconomic imbalances, noting that the issue “is pretty much everywhere at the moment” and commenting, “I think everyone agreed with the commission’s point that we need to look at global imbalances broadly.”
