(non-Swede here) Had a Swedish friend tell me that mashed potatoes are not traditional for Köttbullar, and that it should be boiled potatoes. Is this a regional thing or is there a whole debate going on in Sweden on which is better / more traditional or proper?

Mashed potatoes are fine.
Both are fine and accepted.
It’s just a matter of preferences, both can be considered traditional.
Both works
Actually, you are both right. You serve them boiled, and then you mash them yourself with your fork and alot of butter. the dish should also have a big piece of knäckebrö’ on the side and a glass of Milk.
Both work. But I prefer mashed potatoes if its made in the (for me) right way.
båda har sina meriter
Båda är ok, potatismos är bättre.
Newfangled things such as potatoes? We eat them with black salsify like our forefathers did.
From experience it makes no difference. Most people I know when getting boiled will proceed to mash them manually in the gravy!
For me lingonsylt is more important, the gurka is great to.
It’s just a matter of preference
Boil ’em, mash ’em, stick ’em in a stew!
As long as it’s not instant mashed potatoes I don’t think anyone would complain. But personally I would say boiled are more traditional.
Mashed potatoes are for Tunnbrödsrulle.
A more traditional swedish mash is Rotmos, mashed potatoes with rutabaga, carrots, and parsnip. Though they’re generally not served with meatballs.
I would say boiled are a bit more traditional, but both common. Like i wouldnt see my grandparents making it with mashed potatoes, but yeah could differ between people.
Nu är ju den stora frågan eg: “Vad har du i din brunsås?”
Potato is potato 🥔
That’s the personal preference of your friend that he/she tries to sell as the “correct” option. If you want to serve it sometime, pick the one you prefer, both are just as acceptable.
In restaurants, my experience is that boiled might be slightly more common.
Both are fine.
But i’d say that boiled then mashed is the real deal.
Fast macaroni is the real tradition
Both are fine, but I would agree that boiled potatoes is the traditional side to meatballs.
You’re supposed to have boiled potatoes, then smash them with a fork and let the sauce soke in
Both are fine but the boiled is more comon and godare
Potato potato
There’s absolutely no such rule. Mashed is better, but obviously just potatoes is more traditional.
Both are acceptable, more boiled is more ‘common’ in homes. Mashed is more common in restaurants
Boil the potatoes and then mash them with a bit of butter.
Both are perfectly fine and acceptable. Some people may prefer one over the other. Boiled potatoes are probably more common simply because it’s slightly easier/faster/fewer steps.
Personally I love mash. But if you add gravy it may be too “soupy” of a combination for some, at least I’ve heard that complaint a few times.
So, some people just press their potatoes using an aptly named “potato press”. With gravy, it makes for a less liquid experience.
Boiled potatoes are definitely more traditional, but both are equally common and accepted, if anything mashed potatoes is more common nowadays
No eat what you like
Both good
Your friend is not your friend. He/she is a liar. Mashed potatis is very accepted.
Classic is boiled, but mashed are also fine and to taste.
The traditional way of doing it is meatballs ketchup and macaroni
Traditionally it is boiled but personally only like boiled if it is as we call “nypotatis” or “färskpotatis”. Which means theyre recently picked, fresh.
Winter potatoes are better to mash 100%.
Ursäkta men vart är de stuvade makaronerna?
