Ukraine, together with Moldova, thwarted a plan for a series of high-profile killings that was developed by an intelligence group of the Russian security service. According to investigators, the targets were journalists and public figures, as well as military personnel and representatives of strategic structures who could harm the interests of the aggressor country.

Information indicates that the criminal group operated under cover from the Moldovan direction and tracked addresses, routes, and habits of potential targets. The attack models ranged from close-range gunfire to car bombings; for each case they promised payouts of up to $100,000 depending on the status of the chosen target.

To prevent criminal activity, the investigation found that the group tightly coordinated their steps to achieve the end goal. The operation received the codename “Enigma 2.0” and was conducted jointly on the territory of both countries, as the executors were transported across the Moldovan border. They tracked the addresses, routes, and habits of public figures – journalists, military personnel, and public figures, as well as individual intelligence officers and teams dealing with prisoners of war.

According to the plan, various scenarios were proposed: from close-range shootings to car bombings. For one murder, the Russian security services promised the executors a reward of up to $100,000, depending on the status of the target.

Within the framework of the investigation seven suspects were detained in Ukraine and three more in Moldova, including the organizer of the network and two of his accomplices. All have already been charged; a court petition to choose a preventive measure in the form of detention is being prepared.

Consequences and Next Steps

The main objective of the operation was to neutralize potential threats to journalists, public figures, and military personnel, as well as to the process of information and humanitarian exchange between the countries. The investigation continues to study the entire chain of the group and possible accomplices to fully establish the scale of the criminal network and bring the guilty to justice.
