When it comes to Turkey, NATO needs to consider divorce

  1. I’m not sure about this. Turkey is a key member of NATO and is strategically important. It also serves as a buffer to the Middle East. A stable Turkey is therefore directly in Europe’s interest. Kicking them out of NATO might also drive them into Russia’s arms. On the other hand, if tensions with Greece escalate then NATO has to act.

  2. That’s the stupidest idea I’ve heard… in the past h.

When it comes to Turkey, Europe doesn’t know how to haggle. Quite literally.

  3. They bought S-400 from Russia which means that they cannot get F-35, they have allowed Russian ships to get through the strait to support the invasion to Ukraine, they bought petrol from ISIL, they blackmailed EU with refugees, for which they were given some 5-10 billion Euro, now they block expansion of NATO ….

  4. Turkey is more worth than sweden and finland combined. People really thinking about kicking a 70 year old loyal member out of the Alliance for two nations that were boasting about their neutrality. They are already protected under EU so what is the problem?

  5. Enough, aren’t you tired of writing bad things about turkey every day? What is your purpose? We know that Erdogan is being ridiculous. But that doesn’t mean you constantly vilify us.

  6. >But alliances are formal agreements that indicate a specific kind of commitment, such as marriage. An alliance is a promise between nations to support and defend each other, in good times and bad, sickness and health, or more specifically, peace time or war.

Oh yes, so maybe NATO allies should’ve supported Turkey instead of a terrorist organization in the northeast of Syria, huh?

And then comes the laughable part.

    >NATO, you can do better. Finland and Sweden are courting you, after all. Like Turkey, they have capable, professional militaries and strategic geography, but they also share your values, such as democracy and the rule of law.

Comparing NATO’s second largest army with Swedish and Finnish armies, yeah, shows how “knowledgeable” the author is. Probably she was too busy organizing the wedding ceremony in the last decades or so.

  7. Negotiation process and defending your interest is normal – this has happened million times in all international organisations. Also, people who actually know and understand Turkish history, Turkish politics and Turkish foreign policy know very well that in the end Turkey will do the right thing, and not veto Sweden’s and Finland’s accession to NATO. All articles that suggest otherwise and demand kicking Turkey out of NATO are not giving unbiased analysis, but carry some other aims…
