Alex Cullen’s wife has revealed what she thinks about Danika Mason’s recent Winter Olympics broadcast.
Last week, the Nine sports presenter was reporting from Italy for the Today Show when she appeared to slur and stumble her way through her cross.
The 34-year-old later apologised on-air for the incident, revealing she had had a drink on an empty stomach beforehand, which, combined with the cold high altitudes of Livigno, resulted in her intoxication.
Now, Bonnie Cullen has weighed in on the behaviour one year after her husband Alex was fired for breaching Nine’s code of conduct.
In January 2025, Today’s then-sports presenter Alex accepted a $50,000 gift from billionaire Adrian Portelli, better known as “Lambo guy”, after taking part in an on-air stunt and calling him by his new nickname “McLaren Man” during a broadcast.
The moment was dubbed a breach of Nine’s “cash for comment” code of conduct and resulted in the 45-year-old being sacked by the network.
Cullen’s wife Bonnie seemed to comment on the network’s double standard regarding the actions of the two reporters, after one of her friends wrote on social media: “Well they sacked Alex Cullen for less.”
Bonnie, who is a luxury property reporter for Nine, chimed in by writing in the comments section: “100%.”
On Thursday, Mason paused her live Today Show update to apologise to viewers, saying she “misjudged the situation”.
“And guys, just before we do go, I just want to take a moment, if that’s okay, just to apologise,” she said.
“I also wanted to thank everyone who has reached out. I’m just a little bit embarrassed. I totally misjudged a situation. I shouldn’t have had a drink, and especially in these conditions,” she said.
“It’s cold, we’ve got altitude, and not having had dinner probably didn’t help as well.”
“But I want to take full responsibility. It’s not the standard that I set for myself. So in saying that, I’m sorry… and I’m grateful for those messages that I have received as well.”
Many have jumped to Mason’s defence in the wake of the incident, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who said he was “pro Danika”.
Meanwhile, in July last year, Cullen broke his silence on the Portelli scandal, telling Stellar’s Something To Talk About podcast the incident marked “the hardest, toughest week of my career”.
