If you’re trying to cut back on your grocery spend, consider looking into mystery bag schemes that supermarkets provide. Some retailers offer boxes at a discounted in price, preventing them from throwing away food that would otherwise expire.

The only drawback is you won’t discover what items you’ll get until you open the lucky bags up. It’s probably not one for fussy eaters, but you could make some serious savings by taking a punt.

Keen to try these lucky bags for herself, Laura Khoshaba and her mum Ann went to Iceland supermarket. The pair picked up a mystery bundle for £4 and were excited to open it up. So would it genuinely be worth the money?

What did they get in the Iceland lucky bag?

Tearing into the bag, Ann gushed: “There are a lot of things in there”. Then, her daughter started unpacking the items.

First up was chicken nuggets, dippers and chips. There were also mini quiche Lorraines, BBQ chicken strips, Halloween-themed potato shapes, McCain skin-on fries, chicken bites and waffle fries.

While yummy, that’s a lot of beige food! So thankfully, some fruit or veg was included in the bag too.

The pair pulled out garden peas and sweetcorn, which would be a good veggie side for the chicken and potato products.

Even though a few of the items were similar in the bag, there’s no doubt the pair found themselves some real bargains.

Delighted by the contents of the lucky bag, Ann gushed: “Oh wow. So, this is a lot of food for £4.” Laura agreed, adding that it’s “such a good deal”.

The mum remarked: “Apparently, they do this every day for £4. That’s a lot of food, it’s such a fantastic deal. That’s possibly worth £30? I don’t know. But yeah, that’s a lot of food. Well done Iceland”.

The Iceland website states that its “Frozen Lucky Dip” contains “six random mixed frozen food items”. The supermarket adds they have been “reduced at a major discount to clear space for all of our new products”.

You must spend £25 to redeem the deal and a maximum two bags are allowed per order. It’s also worth bearing in mind that the product is only available online and it is completely luck of the draw what you receive.

In response to the viral video, one customer gushed: “Honestly for £4 that is a steal.” Another agreed, writing: “That’s a very good bargain for family shopping.”

A third wrote: “£4 – no way! That’s a brilliant offer, I want some.” And a fourth added: “Wow that’s a great price.”

However, people have complained that the lucky bags often aren’t in stock. This may be due to popular demand or because of a lack of surplus food.

One disappointed shopper said: “I couldn’t get one. They had sold out apparently.” And another said: “I got an email to say mine was out of stock.”
