Rob Jetten becomes the Netherlands' youngest and first openly gay prime minister

Rob Jetten, 38, has become the youngest and first openly gay prime minister in the Netherlands’ history.

His Democrats’ 66 (D66) party narrowly defeated anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders in the October parliamentary elections.

Jetten has formed a center-right minority government in a coalition with the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and the Christian Democratic Alliance (CDA).

He replaces Dick Schoof as prime minister. The official inauguration took place on Monday at the Heuss ten Bos Palace in The Hague, where King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands swore him in.

In a post published before the inauguration, Jeten noted that the new government would take on the responsibility of serving all citizens of the country, emphasizing the importance of cooperation and joint work.
