BOSTON, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) — Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell is taking action against two propane companies, after hundreds of residents were left without heat or hot water this winter.
We began following this story in early February, when a Palmer woman told us she spent ten days waiting for a propane delivery, and had to deal with her house unheated in the interim.
On Tuesday, letters were sent to Ameri-Gas and Superior Plus Propane, ordering them to immediately fix operational failures that have led to dangerous and unreasonable delivery delays.
The Attorney General’s Office received dozens of customer complaints, saying tanks ran at dangerously low levels or were completely empty during freezing temperatures.
Many customers are locked into exclusive contracts, meaning they can’t turn to another provider, even in an emergency.
Campbell called the situation “dangerous and unacceptable”, noting that many impacted families live in rural areas without access to natural gas and with limited financial resources.
If you’re without heat officials urge you call your propane company and the Attorney General’s consumer hot line immediately.
