MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont Gov. Phil Scott says last week’s National Governors Association meeting at the White House was productive.
Scott initially planned on boycotting the meeting after the president planned to exclude Democratic leaders, but the invite ended up being extended to all participants.
The governor said he had frank discussions across party lines and is hopeful the conversations can make a difference. He also addressed rising political polarization.
“I’m a big believer in respect and civility and decorum, and I think that what we’re seeing is an example of what we shouldn’t be doing,” Scott said. “We should listen to one another and have our disagreements and work together to try and do what we can for our constituents.”
Scott said the meeting came to an abrupt end when the president received word of the Supreme Court’s ruling on tariffs.
