Emergency services are working to free a man trapped inside a crane that toppled and became entangled in live power lines in Brisbane’s east.

Police said he had received life-threatening injuries and they were yet to safely check his condition.

The crane fell at the intersection of Youngs and Hemmant-Tingalpa Roads in Hemmant about 8:30am, bringing down nearby power lines.

Electricity has been cut to about 340 properties in the area and is expected to remain off for some time as Energex crews work to make the scene safe for emergency services.

Queensland police Senior Sergeant Steve Watterson said the scene was “quite tricky” as the crane was “entangled in live powerlines”.

“We’ve had to wait until the power was cut to be able to get the driver, who remains trapped inside the cab,” he said

“We’ve been working with other emergency services to render the scene safe to provide assistance to a male operator.”

Mr Watterson said the Forensic Crash Unit were also on site with a drone to help examine the scene.

A spokesperson for Workplace Health and Safety Queensland said inspectors were onsite and working with police.

Drivers have been urged to avoid the area and emergency services are responding.
