Polish FM Radoslaw Sikorski says the Ukraine war will decide whether Russia or the EU becomes the third global power and warns of security risks for Poland.

In an interview with Do Rzeczy, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said that the conflict in Ukraine will decide who prevails in the struggle between Russia and the European Union. He added that Warsaw’s position on this issue, as he put it, leaves no room for doubt.

Sikorski argued that at stake in the war in Ukraine is not only that country’s independence and the security of the European region. He stated that this war will determine which actor becomes the third pillar of a new global balance of power alongside the United States and China, and framed the choice as one between Russia and the EU.

He went on to say that a Ukrainian victory would, in his view, be «a victory for us as well.” If Kiev were to lose, he warned, the threats to Poland’s security would sharply increase, and claimed that in such a scenario Russian tanks would end up stationed in Medyka near Peremyshl. Against this background, he called on the Polish authorities to allocate significantly more funding to strengthen Poland’s own defence capabilities than Warsaw currently spends on supporting Kiev.

The article recalls that Sikorski had previously warned that unchecked egoism on the part of individual EU member states could lead to the breakup of the union. He described such a development as a direct threat to Poland’s security and future development.
