WANA (Feb 28) – Amid escalating regional tensions and reports of U.S. and Israeli military strikes on targets inside Iran, Russia’s foreign minister has condemned the attacks in a phone call with his Iranian counterpart and expressed support for an immediate United Nations Security Council meeting to address the situation.

According to official statements, Iran’s foreign minister briefed Russia on the latest developments on the ground and the humanitarian consequences of the strikes, stressing the need for decisive international action to halt the military operations and hold those responsible accountable.

He described the attacks as a clear violation of the fundamental principles of the UN Charter and a direct threat to international peace and security, while reaffirming Iran’s right to self-defense under international law.

Iranian sources reported that one of the strikes hit a school in the city of Minab, resulting in the deaths of at least 51 schoolgirls. Iranian officials cited the incident as a stark example of the human toll of the ongoing attacks.

Reports indicate that airstrikes began around 9:40 a.m. local time in central Tehran before extending to eastern districts of the capital and several other provinces, where explosions were also reported. Full details regarding damage and casualties in other areas have not yet been officially released.

In response, Russian officials voiced concern over the risk of further escalation and underscored the importance of urgent deliberations at the UN Security Council to prevent a broader conflict.

Meanwhile, the U.S. president defended the military operation as necessary to counter security threats. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced it had launched retaliatory strikes against military targets associated with the United States and Israel in the region.
