Does anyone in Germany know of or care about the current success of Leon Draisaitl?

  1. The most cared about sport is football by far. Other sports are followed much less. I think there are a fair number if people who care about domestic ice hockey. I don’t know if anyone follows the NHL here.

  2. Never heard about him. But I don’t care about sports at all. I just know those sports people who are constantly in the media. He is not one of them.

  3. Well, he was awarded the prize of the male german athlete of the year in 2020. So I would say his success gets recognized. And as someone living near his hometown of Cologne, I can say he gets mentioned on radio and TV from time to time. So I’d say I know about it even though I do not really follow the NHL.

  4. I couldn’t make a text post – so I linked a video and wanted to ask this question in the comments. I know that hockey is not a popular sport in Germany, but this is not an ordinary situation.

The only analogy I can make is that Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid are the closest thing to the emergence of Messi and Ronaldo that the hockey world has seen in a generation, and they play on the same team. He’s not just a ‘good’ hockey player, he is arguably the best – and only reason he is not unanimously the best player of our generation is because there just happened to be another freak of nature (McDavid) emerge at the same time.

So, while futbol, cricket, handball, whatever are all not popular sports in Canada, I know that if a Canadian futbol player came out of nowhere and started demolishing Bundesliga and making Messi and Ronaldo look like they’ve never touched a ball before, the country would be going absolutely nuts. Not only is this a once in a lifetime talent, it’s a once in many lifetimes story. It’s really difficult to convey in words the degree of domination that these two players are exerting over the National Hockey League right now, but for lack of a better word they are ‘untouchable’. If they keep up their current pace, they will be in very strong contention for two of the best to *ever* play the game.

It’s really special and really exciting. I was born in 1989, so I’m too young to remember the Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux domination of the league (I know, I know, those names mean nothing… think Pele, Maridona, Ronaldo). Now it seems like I may get to witness an era like that.

Peace and love from Canada – I hope you’re all having a wonderful Friday.

  5. Ice hockey has a very small role in German sports media. That’s the problem. Other sports, mostly soccer, dominate the media.

  6. I read his name twice. Both times in this sub, mentioned by people asking if he is known over here.

But I don’t care about sports so I hardly know much about any other athletes either.

  7. American sport leagues getting more and more fans in Germany, especially American Football (NFL game in Germany planned) and also the NHL. Me as a fan of many (team) sports (soccer/football, ice hockey, handball, darts, American Football) know him since he was a player for cologne (KEC) and he was in German television in the past years some times.

  8. Most people don’t even know who Dirk Nowitzki is and why he appears in commercials all of a sudden, and that dude is a fucking legend in his sport.

US leagues are of very minor interest here, and don’t get much coverage.
