Kansas political science professor reacts to U.S. attacks on Iran

  • 2026-03-01

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Michael Smith, a Political Science Professor at Emporia State, said the U.S. and Israeli actions in Iran came as a shock to him.

He said it could have an effect on the balance of power in the Middle East.

Smith pointed out the potential impact today’s news could have on the midterm elections coming up this fall.

He said he thinks that Americans will return to what he calls ‘bread and butter issues’ quickly, and that this attack shouldn’t be used to win elections come November.

“Americans return back to the home, bread and butter, issues pretty quickly. Things like inflation, the cost of housing and the cost of groceries, and if I were advising Trump, I would not rely on this to save the Republicans in the midterms,” said Smith.

Another thing Smith highlighted was that even though the U.S. doesn’t directly buy oil from Iran, the U.S. market could still be affected, since Iran is in the top ten in the world when it comes to oil production.

“It’s sort of like squeezing a balloon. If you try to squeeze the air out of one part of the balloon, it pops up in another, and so if the supply of oil is disrupted, it will affect the United States, and it will affect the markets, regardless of whether or not we buy oil directly from Iran,” said Smith.
