As long as they don’t charge me for the time when the power is off I’m ok with that.
Bet they don’t.
…despite huge price hikes and record profits?
Surely the money from those hikes have been invested back into infrastructure and supply – not squandered on exec bonuses and shareholder pay-outs? *Surely?*
Decades of under-investment in nuclear power has led us here.
At least we’re not as reliant on Russian gas as Germany.
I kind of hope it does happen. I want us back to rolling blackouts and a three day week to see what kind of excuses the Torybots dream up to say this is OK actually. Their mental gymnastics have become quite a spectator sport.
Buy the EV, they said
Same threat last year too. Didn’t happen
People need to believe harder in Brexit – it will keep them warm.
The solution to rising fuel prices we all needed! Better charge up those USB powerbanks
Also: How the government plans to stop people working from home
Note that things like this are done all the time about all sorts of situations. These models are built and they highlight ways to reduce the risk of it happening plus aid some planning should some of the modelled events occur.
*Under plans drawn up by ministers, electricity could have to be rationed for up to six million homes at the start of next year, mostly at peaks in the morning and evening.*
“These are exactly the sort of blackouts you’d get if Labour were in power!” – People living under a Tory government.
Maybe more investment in the distribution and transmission network would have been great from Nation Grid and the DNOs – with National Grid failing to connect generation assets to the grid and Western Power Distribution failing to support vulnerable households…
It’s just their latest strategy to kill WFH. Can’t WFH if there’s no power because it’s prioritised for business during working hours.
We got 350 quid compensation for 5 days of power loss during the storms earlier in the year. I’ll happily take 5 days a month of no power for an extra 4 grand a year.
But apparently Corbyn would have taken us back to the 70’s.
There is absolutely zero urgency on the part of UK planning departments, and UK distribution network operators (DNOs), both of whom are currently roadblocks to increasing power production, and avoiding this.
If right now, today, you got planning permission to build a wind/solar farm, then you are looking at a minimum of a year to get a grid connection, more likely 2 or 3 years.
Thats after a planning process thats probably 18 months to a year minimum.
I’m speaking from first hand experience.
Any shortfall in supply over the next 18 months is basically unavoidable, because of these delays. If the government actually gave a fuck, it would FORCE (with new laws passed today if necessary) planning departments to immediately consent any renewable energy projects that are currently being held up.
Its not even that permission is not granted, or that people object. Its that even if everything goes ok, the planners can take years, and the grid connections can take years. There is ZERO penalty to planners for delaying approval, and ZERO penalty to grid operators for delaying getting new generation connected.
:laughs-in-Tory:
There is no energy shortage
ehh at least the bills will be lower
Does such a model build in the behaviour and capacity of the export market? As I’ve strong doubts no one would have excess to sell during such a period.
Maybe the headline should emphasis this is on a worst case scenario. There are always plans for winter shortages – for example if one or more power stations is unserviceable. This is just scaremongering.
Shit it’s almost as if years of not bothering with renewables and nuclear and just buying oil and gas cheap off Daddy Putin has put us in a bit of sticky situation.
Why did the last labour government do this?
They do talk shiiit.
The writing of a plan is not a posability of it coming true.
At the minute gas prices for electric is very low. Its only the est price thats high which is set long in advanced.
Power cuts are going to be super fun with my “green” apartment with a heat pump, electric hobs/oven and a MVHR instead of windows that open. I can’t even use a portable gas stove as the flat has no ventilation if the power goes out.
you will suffer in the name of net zero.
fucking amazing. a complete fucking failure. totally planned too. how long till we are longer a first world country. fuck me! there’s nothing that can be done! even storming parliament wouldn’t fix this! cant wait for the food shortages next
*”A Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy spokesperson told the PA news agency the UK “has no issues with either gas or electricity supply, and the government is fully prepared for any scenario, even those that are extreme and very unlikely to pass”.*
Don’t we only get < 1% of our gas from Russia?
*”Thanks to a massive £90bn investment in renewable energy in the last decade, we have one of the most reliable and diverse energy systems in the world, and unlike Europe, we are not dependent on Russian energy imports,” they added.”*
It seems like it’s just a nonsense fear mongering headline.
“Shrugs” it’s not like I would be using power anyway. Can’t afford that sort of luxury nowadays.
They blame labour for not building enough nuclear power stations? But been in power 12 years, and had no plan for energy until we enter a full blown crisis. Also, 5 years ago there were plans for 3 new nuclear power stations. Tories let the finances for 2 collapse and didn’t replace them. Also, they let Shell close “Rough” a massive gas storage facility that could be used as a strategic reserve because Shell didn’t want to keep it open! They couldn’t think of a need to do so and so let it close. Now, finally considering re-opening it.
Oh, also banned onshore wind. Stopped the incentives that were insulating 1.6million homes in 2010 with government backed incentives (it’s since collapsed to 50k – governments own data).
Allowed for almost unregulated new entrants to the energy market – but then 30+ went bust because. 1. not sufficiently financially backed. 2. didn’t insist that say 50% of their future energy sales were hedged.
Which 6 million? How do they choose who the unlucky ones are? The other 23m homes are fine?
The UK has a 2GW undersea pipeline that runs from France to UK. Supposed to send electricity to whoever has the more expensive end (who needs it most). 99% of the time it flows to the UK from cheap french nuclear. Only now:
1. Europe will need French electric to replace Putin gas.
2. France has a problem that a larger than usual proportion of it’s nuclear plants are needing to go into 1 year plus maintenance.
3. UK sizewell B is due to close in 2 months. Another 2GW of baseload lost.
4. Europe will be demanding LNG from America. Previously about 24GW of UK grid (50% of our grid was gas generated). This is what’s pushing up the prices.
Looks like a perfect shit storm to me!
Any idea which areas of the country is likely to be effected more ?
Scaled down insulation initiatives and renewable tarries and incentives a decade ago, and many others, and now they boast about how they invested in renewable energy.
