Ukrainian refugees turn to food banks as UK hosts struggle with costs

  1. I do not believe this article is true. Anyhow

If they can’t afford to feed two adults and two kids on £350/month then they should not have offered to take in a refugee. There’s a huge number of people STILL waiting to host Ukrainians who can.

  2. There have been several seperate groups of Ukrainian refugees at my local Trussel Trust foodbank hub today. I have been given instructions on how to respond to requests for help.

We will meet their immediate needs and direct them towards the appropriate local government agency that we already work with. They will provide support and issue Trussel Trust vouchers.

I have spoken to refugees before who are processed to receive Universal Dredit and then left with nothing to cover the inbuilt delay period.

IMO very few of us are equipped to meet the needs of refugees outside of a professional setting. However well-meaning it is risky for all involved.

  3. Totally unforeseeable consequence of the state fobbing off its duty of care to refugees onto private citizens (in the midst of a burgeoning crisis in personal finances no less!). They got that week or two of feel-good headlines though so that’s all that matters really. Party of responsible government everyone.
