  1. The confirmation of the demolition works of the “Dutroux house” in Marcinelle has been received. The work will start on Tuesday 7 June and will be in place by this Friday. Residents of the area also noticed that no parking signs were posted, indicating that something was in the works.

The demolition project had been on the table for many years and discussions had been held with the families of the victims about the future of the site.

A year ago, in June 2021, the Charleroi local council announced that the public contract for the demolition of part of the Marcinelle district where Marc Dutroux’s former home is still located would be launched. A total sum of 825,000 euros had been made available to demolish the house and place a memorial in its place. The memorial will be raised two metres, with flowers, trees and shrubs that bloom all year round. The whole will be framed by two white gables, on one of which a new fresco will be placed: it will be inspired by the one that currently hides the former house of Marc Dutroux, probably a child with a kite.

The parents of the victims and the City of Charleroi had apparently agreed on the name “a garden between earth and sky”. The project should be completed by 2023.

Despite the changes to the surface, it is planned to preserve the cellars at the request of Julie and Mélissa’s parents in case the investigation is resumed.

In the neighbourhood, some people no longer wish to talk about the subject as their lives have been so disrupted and the desire to turn the page was strong. Others think that leaving the house for so long has just allowed some to go on a “macabre tourism”. There are videos on the Internet of visitors congratulating themselves on entering the house. Others think “that it is really time to change this landscape which has given a sad reputation to a neighbourhood considered to be peaceful and that the little girls finally deserve to have a place of recollection worthy of the name.

**On the side of Sars-la-Buisière, they are working to have a complete set of specifications for September**

In the municipality of Lobbes, the file on the demolition of the Dutroux house is still in progress. “We are working on it according to our human and financial means, but it is a very important dossier that we want to complete in the best possible conditions”, explains Mayor Lucien Baudouin.

The specifications are currently being finalised and 85,000 euros have been budgeted for the demolition. “It’s not enough to demolish the house, you also have to plan for the aftermath. I met with the family of the victims last year and a further meeting is to be arranged as it is only logical that they should be involved in the project.”
