The creator of the Luula table drew from the quiet wisdom of a life lived close to nature, blending thoughtful design, the truthful inspiration of natural wood, and craftsmanship passed down through generations. Born from the birch forests of Latvia—trees shaped by the rhythm of seasons and the breath of the Baltic Sea—Luula carries the scent of northern stillness and the timelessness of slow living. Into this foundation, fragments of the creator’s own childhood were woven: the focused joy of long winters, dreams shaped by wood and wind, and the desire to craft something lasting and meaningful for the next generation.

Luula table by Sokolova, won a 2025 Good Design Award from The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design, and Urban Studies.

What emerged transcends a mere table—it is a story carved in wood, a sensory, evolving space where creativity, learning, and security converge.

Each Luula Sensory Play and Learning Table and Chair Set is crafted from sustainably grown Latvian birch plywood, laminated with an opal white film overlay. This material delivers a unique dual benefit: heightened resistance to scratching and wear, paired with a softly reflective surface that amplifies the natural wood grain with luminous depth. The result is a tactile, elegant finish that feels both grounded and ethereal—like light resting in a forest.

Yet design extends beyond aesthetics and touch; it is defined by function. Luula is engineered to grow with the child, offering three height levels that accommodate ages from 18 months to 12 years, aligning with the natural transition to adult-sized furniture. This extended usability honors sustainability through longevity and adaptive evolution.

Functionality permeates the table’s very essence. The set features an openable blackboard doubling as a writing or drawing surface, a locking safety key for parental reassurance, and adjustable heights for ergonomic support. Modular side compartments store art tools, learning aids, or tactile elements, while a clear Plexiglas panel enables dry-erase drawing and layered storytelling. A built-in paper roll ensures endless creativity, complemented by learning boards tailored to visual, sensory, and kinesthetic styles.

Every element serves a pedagogical purpose, empowering children to explore, organize, and express. The raised tabletop edge creates a physical boundary and personal sanctuary—vital for those with attention or sensory sensitivities. Right-side compartments instill order and rhythm, nurturing initiative via structured environments.

In inclusive classrooms and neurodiverse homes, Luula fosters transformation. Teachers and therapists note heightened engagement, focus, and creative autonomy—not merely from its offerings, but from its calming, safe aura. Vertical boards hone fine motor skills and pencil grip, while white and clear acrylic surfaces evoke a “third dimension” for multisensory play. Children layer materials, draw, and narrate in space, forging understanding through motion, light, and texture.

Today, Luula stands as an early childhood companion, illuminating daily moments, advancing learning through form, and cradling joy, calm, and imagination. Its creators envision it serving children worldwide—brightening childhoods, bolstering growth, and shaping a gentler future. Even for those robbed of innocence by war, Luula offers solace: a haven to create, heal, and reclaim the essence of childhood, seeding a safer, wiser tomorrow.
