Iceland makes infuriating change to carrier bags from Monday

Iceland is making a major change to carrier bags starting from TODAY. Iceland, which is a frozen food specialist with stores in Birmingham, has shaken things up in a number of areas across the UK.

Iceland has announced “bagless” online orders in select areas as part of a sustainability drive. It means customers in parts of the UK will receive their shopping in loose reusable crates instead of plastic or paper bags.

A notice shared to Facebook’s Extreme Coupons and Bargains group read: “Just a quick reminder that starting tomorrow, Monday 2nd March, we’re introducing bagless home deliveries in your area as part of sustainability.

“But don’t worry it’s still the same service you know and love.”

An Iceland Foods spokesperson said: “We have been trialling bagless deliveries in a number of areas across the UK as part of our industry-leading commitment to reduce plastic usage.

“Following a successful trial, which saw improved service and customer satisfaction, we are rolling our bagless deliveries across our entire UK network which will remove over 100 million carrier bags from circulation each year.

“As part of this new process, our home delivery drivers will be allocated more time at the doorstep to complete bagless deliveries, and we will always empower our drivers to help where required to support our customers with their deliveries.”

But taking to social media to slam the move, one Iceland shopper fumed: “My Iceland order came today, no bags used at all.”

Another said in response to the change from the supermarket: “I now don’t order from Iceland because it coming in bags was easier for us.”

And another asked: “How about making it a choice of whether you want it bagged or bagless.”

A fourth chipped in by saying: “A good tip is to keep your own bags just inside the door and unpack into those when it arrives.”
