Approximately half of all tourists visiting Iceland cite television and other entertainment programmes as their main reason for travelling to the country, RÚV reports.
The influence of clips and photos of Iceland appearing in television shows and films are definitive, director general of the Iceland Tourist Board Arnar Már Ólafsson told RÚV.
RÚV recently reported that following the screening of the Stranger Things’ finale, which took place at Háifoss in Þjórsárdal, Google searches for the waterfall increased by more than 5.000 per cent.
Arnar claims these appearances are valuable for tourism in Iceland, and that the Tourist Board’s surveys support this.
Iceland’s landscape has appeared numerous times in high-profile entertainment media. With the release of Ben Stiller’s film The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty, Kirkjufell’s popularity rose significantly, as did Fjaðrárgljúfur after appearing in Justin Bieber’s music video “I’ll Show You”.
Note: The Reykjavík Grapevine is broke. We need money. Recently we had to inform all of our journalists that we won’t be able to afford their work unless our fortunes change. It has been our purpose to bring journalism and cultural coverage of Iceland to the rest of the world for almost 24 years, and while business has always been difficult, it has become ever more so in the past few years, making it harder to fulfil our purpose. Any amount will help. More will help more. Donate here.
