Following the February 19 arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, Kate Middleton’s style choices have been “very intentional,” stylist Liza Talbot said in an interview with The Daily Mail.
“The most powerful style statement can often be restraint,” Talbot added.
Every outfit the Princess of Wales has worn since the arrest has been a repeat from her existing wardrobe, including her appearance at the BAFTAs.
Though Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has been stripped of all royal titles and privileges, his February 19 arrest still reflects on the royal family as a whole. Kate Middleton has made several public appearances since then, and her outward presentation reflects the seriousness of the situation.
The Princess of Wales seems to be maintaining a “steadiness” through her wardrobe choices, despite the royal family’s current state of instability. In the weeks following Andrew’s arrest, the future queen has deliberately chosen to wear items from within her own closet, which sends a message of its own.

On February 19, the former Prince Andrew was arrested at his new home on the Sandringham estate, Wood Farm, and booked into custody for roughly 11 hours on suspicion of misconduct in public office, stemming from when he served as a U.K. trade envoy. Andrew allegedly leaked classified information to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during his time in the role, which lasted from 2001 to 2011.
Two days after his arrest, on February 21, Kate re-wore a royal blue coat from Alexander McQueen to a rugby match. The next day, she re-wore an ethereal blush pink and mauve Gucci gown to the BAFTAs, which she attended with her husband Prince William.

On February 26, the Princess of Wales re-wore a burgundy coat from Alexander McQueen, as well as a coordinating Me+Em blouse and pleated Co skirt for a day of engagements in Wales. Later, on March 1, she appeared in a video message honoring St. David’s Day—the national holiday of Wales—in a red and black houndstooth Alessandra Rich dress she’s worn in the past.
What does all of this mean? Stylist Liza Talbot theorizes that these outfit choices are intentional. She told The Daily Mail that Kate’s recycled wardrobe “signals continuity, responsibility, and respect,” adding that her re-wears were a “very intentional” choice.
“Re-wearing [clothing] subtly communicates steadiness and humility,” she said. “In situations where public sensitivity is heightened, the most powerful style statement can often be restraint.”
“At times when the wider royal family is under scrutiny, clothing becomes less about fashion and more about message,” Talbot continued. “By choosing familiar pieces from her existing wardrobe, she removes any distraction and keeps the focus on her role and her work rather than what she’s wearing.”
