They should put a load of caravans and horses outside there, and just live there. It’s part of their culture and the government has no right to move them on.
Great place to get free rent and electricity. Maybe provoke a politician and sue. I’m sure their jobs won’t miss them for a few months.
Strange venue for a bare knuckle fight
It’s great the way they alway bring those cutesy horse drawn wagons like they’re still travelling the country fixing kettles and singing songs in exchange for a place to set up camp for a few nights
>The National Traveller Mental Health Network has said that successive governments have failed to address the “dire conditions” in which Travellers are living.
The government doesn’t clean my house
>The National Traveller Mental Health Network has said that successive governments have failed to address the “dire conditions” in which Travellers are living.
Now I’ve nothing against living in mobile homes with paper thin walls, moving about so that access to basic resources is up in the air and dumping on your own ground.. but it seems like a choice lol
Must be hard to contribute so much to society and receive little in return.
> They say their community has no hope of a future due to institutionalised racism and a lack of political will.
Absolute bollocks, governments in this country have repeatedly bent over backwards to help them but apparently that’s not enough.
They do have a point about mental health services, but that is not specific to travellers.
The article says 82% or 90% have been affected by suicide but doesn’t give comparable figures for the rest of society. Suicide is a horrific thing for anyone to have to deal so I’m not trying to lessen what they’ve suffered, but it’s a very lucky person in this country that hasn’t been affected by suicide.

I hear the protests will end when travellers procure a contract to tarmac the the front of the Dali , a payment will be made but luckily no disruption to traffic will ensue.
They’d want to clean up their attitude and behaviour. If they want better treatment. Even if they get away with murder half the time.
They are the scourge of society peddling drugs in every town in Ireland the government and the cop’s know it.
Fair play to them, must be something they really believe in for so many of them to take annual leave from work to attend a protest.
The traveler’s they have been living off the “in to the west” stereotype for that last 30 odd years, and the government has been bending over backwards to appease them, all I ever see when it comes to traveler’s is bad excuses for bad behaviour.
What I have seen when traveler’s move into a spot is black bags of rubbish piled high, litter everywhere around their site and they never only stay for a few nights.
Most people’s opinions of travellers are based on news stories and interactions with travellers that result in conflict. That’s a very narrow basis for an opinion.
Same arguments are made about australian aboriginies and native americans, they just drink/do drugs, are lazy etc.
For 2 minutes imagine you grew up on a halting site, anybody that says they should just go get a job has no idea what that would be like.
We have a traveller Senator, can you imagine how difficult an achievement that is.

>“If you’re a young person and you can’t get an education and you can’t get employment and you’re facing discrimination every day of your life and if you’ve a family trauma in your life, that’ll all build up,” she told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland.
Go to school then? It’s not our fault you don’t go!
Are they looking for commission with all the big turnout at the airport hoping for another scrap at the airport?
And now on r/ireland, our regularly scheduled Traveller-bashing.
Tune in tomorrow for a thread swearing blind that racism is an American import.
Once again Travellers want the benefits and support of settled society without wanting to contribute or at minimum abide by the rules the rest of us do.
I grew up like many with little love for travellers, but as I have gotten older and seen the cycle of children growing up in the environments in which many traveller children do I have changed my outlook. It still angers me when I do see the carry on of some travellers and I get outraged when I read about attacks on older vulnerable people by criminals who are travellers. The thing is not all travellers do these things….. but by painting them all with the same brush we facilitate the bullying of decent travelling people by the criminal element and we also alienate decent travelling people turning them against mainstream society. I was stopped by British coppers at the airport when I flew to the UK in the early 90s… I was profiled and separated largely because I was irish… that really annoyed me. In London I was subjected to 2 incidents of anti irish racism… in fact I’d say any irish person over 40 who spent any time in the UK can tell similar stories. If the Queen of England had tried to visit Ireland at that time… we would all have been protesting… because at that time the British media basically equated irishness with the IRA. So next time you see a traveller up in Court or skipping a queue feel angry or whatever you feel at the time for their behaviour don’t blame all of them for it. Maybe helping those travellers who need mental health support will help to change that cycle…
But they are predominantly self imposed barriers as a result of their own culture and decisions.
Nobody is saying to the travelling community as individuals or as a whole that they cannot receive the same care that others do. Indeed they even have their own liaison to facilitate such.
This is not to say I am u sympathetic to the issues they face.
I believe in particular that their suicide levels are disproportionate and a tragedy.
I genuinely hope that this is something that’s not as devastatingly high in future
Surprised none of the people on here moaning about it , will go and tell them how they feel about their protest.
I am no fan of the criminal elements, but I read this and my heart broke for these women. Reading about the shame of going to school filthy and smelly. What chance did they have?
How much are the willing to change to improve things? Has to be a two way street, cannot hide behind a culture which seems to glorify and elevate violence, animal cruelty, and misogyny.
Dumping good money and support into a community who want it all there way and have nothing but contempt for the rest of the society they live with is not the way.
Fair play. No reason all travellers should be tarred with the same brush. We wouldn’t stand for it for anyone else.
Basically they’re saying… “It’s All Society’s Fault” !!
Def an attitude of them & us from both sides with little or no middle ground.
Everyone thinks permanent halting sites are a great idea as long they’re only visible through the Hubble telescope & no closer.
They should park outside of the Dail in their brand new cars on English Reg’s instead of that Wagon that hasnt seen a road in 80yrs.
It’s a bit like the DUP and Brexit, they have the best of both worlds but just refuse to see the obvious benefits. They both took a stance and will never change.
Oh boy I sure hope I find no quirky and unusual comments under this post. What’s the worst that could happen?
