Why Catalonia Failed

  1. Ok, from the pov of someone who is from Catalonia the article is quite interesting however I should read it again to have a more strong opinion about it.

For now, I would say is that ‘catalonia’ didn’t fail. Catalonia is a comunidad autónoma (similar to a state), the thing that fail was the independence of Catalonia.

I have to say that during 2016-2018 it was a very controversial topic (it has always been but was more strong in those years). There was people who ended up relationship just because they have a different pov. It wasn’t my case I have friends who want the independence and others who don’t.

  2. The article glorifies the “grassroots movement” that supported an independent Catalonian as “highly educated”. In reality, plenty supported independence just because it was trendy, because they were lied about it’s motivations and consequences. That explains why it could gain support quickly, then lose it equally fast.

I suppose the article represents well the view of some people in Catalonia. What it neglects is the view of all this people in Catalonia who don’t want independence. This is not about pro-Spain vs against-Spain. It’s about breaking up with everything as you know it. It involves the European Union and other global powers. An independent movement seeking to break the law without international support was always doomed to fail. Pro-independence catalonians didn’t have what it takes. They didn’t think it through, they didn’t have enough.

  3. Adding to another comment, the article fails to mention the lies. The Catalonian independence revolves around Spanish oppression. Unfortunately for pro-independence catalonians millions of tourists every year saw a free and thriving Catalonia. The pro-independence leaders couldn’t be believed.

  4. Brexit has basically sealed every independence movement in europe fro a long time

Its hard to argue for independence when the other twats with 65m have done it so poorly
