INCLUDING GATHERINGS IN TEHRAN SQUARES, WILL CONTINUE. GAS PRICES CONTINUE TO SKYROCKET AMID THIS CONFLICT. THIS WAS THE STATEWIDE AVERAGE ON MONDAY, $2.88. ON TUESDAY, IT JUMPED TO JUMPED $0.19 TO 307. AND THEN TODAY IT’S EVEN HIGHER UP ANOTHER $0.12 TO $3.19, A 30 $0.01 JUMP IN JUST TWO DAYS. WESH 2 NEWS LINDSEY SALON SAT DOWN WITH TRIPLE A TO SEE WHAT WE CAN EXPECT AT THE PUMP. IT’S BEEN A WHILE SINCE WE’VE REALLY HAD TO WORRY ABOUT THE PRICE OF THE PUMP. USUALLY I’M ABLE TO FIND ONE THAT’S LIKE 2.99 OR SOMETHING OR 270. BUT THE STATE AVERAGE IS NOW AT 319, AND IT’S ONLY TICKING HIGHER. WE’RE RIGHT NOW SEEING SOME OF THE HIGHEST GAS PRICES THAT WE’VE SEEN HERE IN FLORIDA SINCE LAST SPRING. MARK JENKINS WITH TRIPLE A SAYS IT’S HARD TO KNOW HOW MUCH MORE PRICES GO UP, BUT DID NOTE THIS IS NOWHERE NEAR WHAT WE WERE PAYING A FEW YEARS AGO WHEN RUSSIA INVADED UKRAINE. DURING THAT TIME, WE SAW GAS PRICES UPWARDS OF $4.50, EVEN CLOSER TO $5 A GALLON. BUT DURING THAT TIME, OIL PRICES WERE MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE. THEY WERE AT $120 A BARREL. FOR CONTEXT, RIGHT NOW, A BARREL IS RIGHT AROUND $74. EVERY TIME ONE OF THESE GOES UP BY A DOLLAR, THE PRICE YOU PAY AT THE PUMP GOES UP ABOUT TWO AND A HALF CENTS A GALLON. A LITTLE MORE THAN HALF OF THE PRICE AT THE PUMP IS DICTATED BY THE PRICE OF CRUDE OIL. MUCH OF THAT HINGES ON THE STRAIT OF HORMUZ, WHERE 20% OF THE WORLD’S OIL TRAVELS. BUT IT’S CURRENTLY STOPPED BECAUSE OF THE STRIKES IN THE MIDDLE EAST. THE WHITE HOUSE SAID THEY HAVE A PLAN TO GET IT MOVING. SINCE THAT ANNOUNCEMENT WAS MADE, THAT ALMOST BROUGHT SOME STABILITY INTO THE OIL MARKET. BUT ALL DRIVERS NOTICE IS THE JUMP IN MY POCKET. YEAH, I DON’T LIKE IT. I DON’T LIKE IT. I MEAN, IT WAS UNDER $3 THE OTHER DAY. NOW IT’S LIKE 329, 369 SOME PLACES AND I DO UBER IN 2022, UBER, LYFT AND INSTACART ALL ADDED A FUEL SURCHARGE TO CUSTOMER BILLS RANGING FROM 40 TO $0.55. WE ASKED IF THEY PLAN TO DO THAT AGAI

In 48 hours, gas prices jumped 31 cents, bringing Florida’s state average to $3.19. Mark Jenkins with AAA said we are seeing some of the highest gas prices in Florida since last spring, but he did caution that it could be much worse. “This is nowhere near what we were paying a few years ago when Russia invaded Ukraine. During that time, we saw gas prices upwards of $4.50, even closer to $5 a gallon. But during that time, oil prices were much more expensive. They were at $120 a barrel. Right now they’re around $74 a barrel. They’ve moved about $7 since Friday, and that’s the equivalent of about a 20-cent swing in gas prices,” Jenkins explained. The prices of oil depend greatly on what’s happening in the Strait of Hormuz, where 20% of the world’s oil travels, but it’s currently stopped because of strikes in the Middle East. On Tuesday, the White House administration announced it would have the Navy escort tankers through the strait if necessary. “When that announcement was made, it almost kind of brought some stability. Prices leveled out around $74 a barrel. But of course, with the oil market being headline-driven, if there’s another attack that occurs, if the unforeseen happens, then you can see oil prices increase as a result,” warned Jenkins. Jenkins explained that for every $1 increase in a barrel of oil, you pay 2 1/2 cents more per gallon at the pump. In 2022, Uber, Lyft and Instacart added a temporary “fuel surcharge” to customer bills, saying it would help offset the increased cost of gas. WESH 2 reached out to all three companies on Wednesday to ask if they would consider another fee, but has not heard back.
