The Indo asked them why it happened and the response – and I’m _barely_ paraphrasing it was “I dunno lol”
Didn’t they hire an extra 200-300 security staff after the fiascos of last month? Surely even if some are unavailable they should still be able to cover things.
> Asked why the airport did not have enough staff to deal with yesterday’s numbers, Mr Cullinane said the airport is operating on “very fine margins”, and is “running to the max” of available staffing levels.
In my opinion an airport should not operate on margins. It doesn’t have to bring in money as government can choose to subsidise it
This is it though. Typical Irish sort of response. We wait till everything becomes absolutely overwhelmed before we do something about it. We often fail to see the urgency when things get out of hand. I’d say any German or Swede there would be absolutely flipping out at the inefficiency .
Who’s going to be sacked over this? I mean this embarrassment, this epic incompetence has to have been caused by someone, somewhere making an absolute balls of their job. Surely?
Had a look at the DAA website to see what their ownership is etc…
Their HR director/’chief people officer’ is called Brian Drain.
It’s so close to brain drain, it’s barely an anagram.
😬
My friend had his flight to philly yesterday delayed 3 and a half hours and apparently is missing bags as well. What a shocking state its in.
So what is the cause.
I’ve heard people saying it had to do with staff reduction over the covid period and them something about 9 month vetting period for new staff but the pay is so shite that many people in that period leave for better paid jobs.
Heard this from a sales person who deals with DAA over duty free stuff.
Does anyone know the actual cause? Is it a staff shortage due to speculation above or were they way off the ball?.
Edit: based on the answers below it seems to be one aspect of the issue thank you people.
I’ve 2 questions
If you checked in a bag but missed your flight due to security queues are there massive delays happening then?
If you got there in time but the slow system fucked you over who is paying compensation? Some flights are mad money.
Eugh so stressful I fly from terminal one on Wednesday at 2pm I may as well get in the queue now
Can’t wait until we get people saying that we are all overreacting and that all is grand. “You never been to an airport in (insert name of a shitty airport of a poor third country), that’s bad. This is fine.”.
Most services in Ireland are way below the level of what they should be. And it’s mostly due to negligence, because the money is there.
The airlines are washing their hands of this but they can’t. They knew about this but did not warn customers or provide extra flights and reschedule. That is not an extraordinary circumstance according to the law and they are legally obliged to pay compensation. Saying it’s not our fault is ridiculous because the law only allows them to say that in very limited circumstances and this isn’t one of them. This has been going on for weeks and they still expect people to turn up in the knowledge they’ll likely not fly because if ***they*** change it, ***they*** have to compensate passengers.
There’s a sneaky aspect to saying the DAA should compensate travellers, they shouldn’t. The airlines are the DAA’s customers, they will get compensated by the DAA and they in turn are obligated to compensate their customers. The two aren’t connected under law.
Maybe also if there were more destinations from Cork (and Shannon) then all of us from Cork would not need to Travel up to Dublin to go on holiday.
ITT: People who called for international travel to be banned for 2020/2021 now upset that airports can’t just be switched back on instantaneously
Probably overlapping Venn Diagram with those who complain about hotel prices but also complain about planning permission for hotels in Dublin and also those who complain about rental car prices for similar reasons to DAA woes
“Airport operator” is a bit of a misnomer since they can’t really operate an airport.
Surely it makes more sense to offer better contracts to staff rather than compensate passengers who miss flights?
Supposed to be flying out this Friday for my first holiday with the other half … I think it’s fair to to say that IF we make our flight it’s going to be a test of our relationship to survive this nonsense!
Is there a way of putting in for compensation? We missed our flights on wends and had to book a €150 lingus flight as Ryanair wouldn’t/couldn’t help…
Anyone else think there’s a serious security risk? Unprecedented levels of people in the airport and a number of airport police ill equipped to even deal with a traveller fight
From what I’ve seen, the queues outside are just to get in to the airport (regardless if you have checked luggage or not). Would it not make more sense to have two lines, those who need to go to the check in desks and those who can go through to security?
This does mean that 49,000 people made their flights! Glass half full! 😂
Does anyone know the time line of these missed flights? Is it the last week, month or whatever? The article doesn’t make it clear. Regardless, this is an absolute scandal.
Any tips for someone traveling with big luggage during the week? or is the issue of queues related only with weekend flights?
Barely made my flight this morning and I was there well in advance. It was only because people were nice enough to let me skip them in security that I managed to get to the gate in time
These cunts were given the run cork airport too and sent it’s best routes up to Dumplin. Cunts
“Can’t wait to be finally going on holiday after all that covid shit”
Lol
They need to start cancelling flight slots. Bring the demand down until there’s enough worker supply to get people through. This has been going on for fucking months.
I’d resign if I was running that shit show. Clearly not competent enough. Absolute shambles.
Never fly the day after big sporting events – lots of security/screeners call in sick with hangovers (allegedly)

The UK is the same…https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10709093/amp/Emergency-bid-avert-Easter-airport-chaos.html
USA also has the same problems
