From the geothermal lagoons of Iceland to the sauna-to-sea plunges of Senja, Europe’s islands offer wellness experiences in their most elemental forms. On Ischia and Nisyros, volcanic springs bubble up through rock and sand; in the Azores, crater lakes and warm tidal pools punctuate Atlantic hikes. Elsewhere, on wind-brushed Iona or forested Saaremaa, restoration comes not from heat, but from bracing water, clean air and contemplative landscapes. Across the continent’s fringes, these islands return wellbeing to its roots, shaped as much by place as by tradition.

1. Ischia, Italy

Since ancient times, water and wellness have been intimately linked, and few places encapsulate this as deeply as Ischia, a mountainous volcanic isle off Italy’s Campania coast. Just an hour’s ferry ride from the bustle of Naples, its lush green hillsides and picturesque beach coves have attracted health and wellbeing seekers for millennia. The Etruscans, Greeks and Romans, including naturalist author Pliny the Elder, employed its mineral-rich thermal waters and mud in restorative and medicinal rituals.

Today, the tradition continues through a series of polished seaside baths such as Negombo (negombo.it) in the north and Poseidon Gardens (giardiniposeidonterme.com) in the west, both manicured wonderlands of greenery-wrapped hydrotherapy pools. In the south, the naturally formed rock pools at Sorgeto Bay bring immersion right to the water’s edge, where saltwater meets geothermal currents. Entrance is free and locals sometimes bring bags of eggs to cook in the hottest pools.

When you’ve hit your spa threshold, Ischia has plenty more to discover, including the fascinating history of the islet fortress Castello Aragonese (castelloaragoneseischia.com), which has hosted a convent, catacombs and even a prison over more than two millennia of human habitation, and towns such as Forio and Lacco Ameno. For a full reset, tackle the hike up 789m Mount Epomeo, the island’s highest point. After the thigh burn, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views over both the island and sea, as well as a cosy lunch at Ristorante La Grotta da Fiore, which is set in a cave carved into tuff rock.

2. Iona, Inner Hebrides

The tiny Hebridean island of Iona was an early foothold of Christianity in the British Isles, home to a community of monks who practised a nature-focused faith. Today, it’s Scotland’s most evocative place of pilgrimage. Christians come from afar to step among the ruins of a monastery dating to the sixth century and to tread in the footsteps of Saint Columba, who famously sailed from Ireland in a coracle to found it. The island also draws spiritual seekers of less rigid faith and indeed none, who wish to immerse themselves in nature on this mystical, windblown landmass on the cusp of the North Atlantic: to hear the cry of seabirds, the bark of resident seals and the rake of waves along shingly beaches.

Part of the adventure is getting there. Most travellers catch a westbound ferry from the Highland port of Oban, followed by a bus across the neighbouring island of Mull along a lonely single-track road beneath brooding mountains. Finally, a second ferry carries you across the Sound of Iona to the holy island itself. At the end of a long journey, visitors can find peace on the blustery beaches of the west coast or seek sanctuary in the cloisters of the medieval abbey, which offers retreats for much of the year. Here, at the western edge of Eurasia, you stand in a place that’s removed from the world, with an entire continent at your back. Many leave invigorated and replenished as they present their return ticket for the ferry home.

3. Iceland

It wasn’t until around 870 AD, when Norse settlers arrived by boat, that Iceland’s hot springs began to be used for bathing as a means of surviving the harsh winters. Over time, people recognised the physical and mental relief of soaking in these naturally heated pools, easing muscle tension and reducing stress. What began as a practical necessity evolved into a daily ritual and a powerful cultural tradition.

Icelanders gradually transformed natural hot springs into public geothermal pools, creating places to unwind, socialise and spend time with family and friends. By 2024, around 79% of Icelandic adults regularly visited geothermally heated public swimming pools. Today, bathing culture is so ingrained in daily life that it’s earned a place on Unesco’s 2025 Intangible Cultural Heritage List — a testament to its enduring importance for locals and travellers alike.

By harnessing the Earth’s natural heat, Iceland has become home to a number of world-class spas and retreats. Destinations such as the Blue Lagoon, set in a lava field on the Reykjanes Peninsula, and Highland Base at Kerlingarfjöll in the central highlands are sought-after escapes for travellers seeking restoration. Offering treatments such as in-water massage and flotation therapy, these retreats blend mineral-rich waters infused with iron, sulphur and silica with outdoor immersion, creating experiences that soothe both body and mind.

4. Senja, Norway

Quieter than the nearby Lofoten Islands and without the Santa-chasing crowds that blight other quarters of Lapland, the island of Senja is the Norwegian Arctic at its most sublime. Granite peaks rise over deep-gouged fjords and little villages of blood-red cabins perch beside driftwood-strewn beaches.

Sparsely inhabited and threaded by only a handful of roads, it’s a place that invites every visitor to slow down and absorb the particular calm of the continent’s northern edge. In the dark days of winter, you might drift through long stretches of sleep, confident the sun will barely breach the horizon, or spend your waking hours in a hot tub awaiting the aurora’s dance — the tub at Hamn i Senja resort is fashioned from an old fishing boat.

Whatever the season, Senja is a natural setting for friluftsliv, the Norwegian philosophy of open-air living. Popularised by playwright Henrik Ibsen in the 19th century and still widely embraced today, the concept celebrates the physical and mental restoration that comes from time spent in nature.

Those with energy to spare can set out on winter snowshoeing expeditions through Narnia-esque landscapes or, during the long light of summer, paddle kayaks along fjords that, on a map, resemble the fingers of an outstretched hand. Few experiences are as invigorating as plunging into icy water straight from a sauna — perhaps at the floating Damperiet Sauna — feeling the delicious burn of cold on your skin as you gulp down fresh Arctic air.

5. Hvar, Croatia

Aimed at: wellness purists

The spear-shaped island of Hvar has long had a reputation as the Dalmatian archipelago’s party hotspot, but that’s only part of the story. While you might catch the distant pulse of nightlife around Hvar Town and the western shore, much of the island remains deeply tranquil — a mosaic of scrubby hills and olive groves, terracotta-roofed villages and coves lapped by turquoise water.

And then there are the lavender fields. Once a global hub of lavender production, Hvar’s interior is covered by sweep swathes of violet each summer. You could lose hours wandering or cycling among them, particularly around the village of Velo Grablje, the focus of an annual lavender festival.

Those craving a deeper lavender immersion might head to Maslina Resort, set on a headland outside the port of Stari Grad. Here, dedicated itineraries include lavender baths and treatments inspired by the plant, along with the simple pleasure of drifting off to sleep with its herbal scent lingering in the air.

If you feel the need to escape Hvar’s livelier pockets altogether, strike east along the island’s single meandering main road that follows a long ridge of hills. At the remote Cast Away resort, in the hamlet of Gromin Dolac, a desert-island calm prevails. Budget-friendly A-frame huts sit among the pines, and days slip by in hammocks strung above the shore, views stretching out to the distant scatter of islands along the southern horizon.

6. Nisyros, Greece

Less than five miles in diameter, Nisyros is tiny compared with the better-known islands of the Dodecanese. Fertile volcanic soil makes it greener than most places in the Aegean, and far quieter too, with only two main coastal villages of clustered whitewashed houses, Mandraki and Pali.

Serene as it may appear, Nisyros has fire in its belly. A Unesco Global Geopark, it’s home to the active Stefanos volcano, whose vast caldera can be entered on foot. Inside, sulphur crystals crust the ground and steam rises from hissing vents, a constant reminder of the seething forces below.

Those geothermal energies have long been linked with healing. Local legend says the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates sent patients here for help with rheumatism and arthritis. The historic public spa has closed, but in the village of Emporios a sauna — freely accessible and formed by geothermal steam channelled into a simple stone chamber — offers an intense but restorative experience.

7. Saaremaa, Estonia

Saaremaa, the largest island in the Western Estonian Archipelago, lies south west of Tallinn, across the Suur Strait. Sparsely populated and low lying, it’s home to quiet walking trails, spa hotels and nature-based wellness retreats such as HOIA Nature Spa, which draws on local plants, peat and sea air.

The island’s main town, Kuressaare, is easily reached by bus. Protected areas include Vilsandi National Park, a refuge for migratory birds like Steller’s eiders. The wider archipelago is a Unesco Biosphere Reserve, safeguarding peat wetlands and alvar forests of spruce, pine and birch. With 40% of the island forested, air quality is exceptional.

Since 1824, when the therapeutic properties of its mineral-rich mud were first documented, the island has attracted those seeking restorative treatments. Today, therapists draw on seaweed and grasses from the shoreline, alongside the enduring ritual of the sauna: hot steam, juniper whisking, a cold plunge and rehydration — deeply grounding and calming.

8. Azores, Portugal

Once dependent on farming, fishing and whaling, the ruggedly beautiful Azores have reinvented themselves as a low-key destination for wellness, nature and sustainable tourism. You could focus your stay on São Miguel — the largest island, just over four hours from London by air — or island-hop across some of the other eight. Either way, the archipelago rewards with a blend of exertion and ease, from crater hikes and forest trails to waterfalls and coastal rockpools, some naturally warmed by geothermal heat.

On São Miguel, Ponta Delgada combines black-and-white calçada pavements with jewel-box baroque churches, offering a distinctly Portuguese sense of place. While the city has a growing number of eco-conscious spa hotels, the most atmospheric bathing lies 27 miles east in Furnas. Here, visitors soak in the Poça da Dona Beija thermal baths or retreat to Parque Terra Nostra, an 18th-century estate with an iron-rich thermal lake set within a luxuriant botanical garden.

Perhaps not traditionally associated with wellness, but time spent on the water — and in the presence of animals — is increasingly recognised for its mental health benefits. In the Azores, that translates into some of the most reliable cetacean-watching in Europe. Spotting trips depart from Ponta Delgada, Lajes do Pico and Horta, and with patience, sightings of whales and dolphins are highly likely. The Azores Marine Protected Area Network, established in 2024, safeguards feeding grounds and migration routes for 28 species, while the entire archipelago sits within a designated Whale Heritage Area.

9. Ikaria, Greece

Aimed at: longevity chasers

By tradition, the Greek island of Ikaria takes its name from the myth of Icarus, the young man who famously flew too close to the sun, melting the beeswax that held his wings together and plunging to a watery death below. Somewhat paradoxically, the inhabitants of his namesake island are renowned for their longevity, and the same combination of sun and sea that proved fatal to him is thought to help prolong lives here. Today, Ikaria is one of just five places in the world identified by writer Dan Buettner as a Blue Zone, regions where people are known to live remarkably long and healthy lives.

Even on a short visit to this small island, it’s easy to spot some of the elements thought to underpin Ikarian longevity. The landscape itself plays a role: head to the seawater hot springs at Therma, where mineral-rich waters bubble up into the shallows and bathers linger. Diet, too, is central, with local menus built around seafood, vegetables and antioxidant-rich wild herbs, complemented — in moderation — by wine from small, family-run wineries such as Afianes.

Locals are also known to look out for one another — allegedly a legacy of the Greek Civil War, when communists were banished to Ikaria — and a strong sense of solidarity endures. While you can’t sign up as a partisan, you can glimpse this comradely spirit at the panagiria (village festivals), where eating, drinking and dancing take place in squares, and spirits soar as high as Icarus once did.

10. Corsica, France

Aimed at: holistic wellness enthusiasts

With its Mediterranean climate and pale-sand beaches, Corsica is one of France’s most restorative regions. Unmistakably French yet laced with Italian influence, the island has its own distinct wellness heritage that draws on both cultures. This is most evident in the cuisine: chestnuts — rich in fibre and antioxidants — feature heavily, while traditional cheeseboards centre on brocciu, the island’s signature whey cheese, prized for being low in fat and lactose.

The therapeutic value of Corsica’s hot springs — notably at Guagno-les-Bains, in the island’s mountainous interior, and the Caldane Baths in the south — has been recognised since Roman times. Today, thalassotherapy is also offered at a number of high-end coastal hotels, including the Grand Hôtel de Cala Rossa, whose spa draws on heated seawater pools, marine algae and sea-derived minerals. Elsewhere, properties such as U Palazzu Serenu and Domaine de Murtoli in the south-west, offer herbal massages using essential oils distilled from wild myrtle, catnip and the curry plant — staples of the island’s maquis scrubland.

For those seeking a more vigorous path to wellbeing, Corsica’s rugged interior delivers a formidable challenge. One of Europe’s toughest long-distance footpaths, the 112-mile GR20 runs from Calenzana to Conca, cutting through pine forests and stark highlands. Technical and demanding in places, it requires at least a fortnight to complete in full. A gentler alternative is the lower-altitude southern section from Vizzavona, which can be walked in around a week.
