An 18-year-old surf lifesaver who disappeared before a training session at a Sunshine Coast beach on Wednesday has been found dead.

Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLQ) said the man came off his board in the water at Buddina Beach at about 4:15pm, prompting a multi-day search.

On Friday night police said in a statement that the man was found dead at about 6pm.

SLQ chief operating officer Greg Cahill said the man’s death had impacted the surf lifesaving community across the state.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for our clubs on the Sunshine Coast and for surf lifesavers right across Queensland,” he said.

“On behalf of Surf Life Saving Queensland, I extend our sincere and heartfelt condolences to this young man’s family and friends during this devastating time.

“We are committed to ensuring welfare and peer support services are available to our members, volunteers and staff who have been impacted.”

The search effort involved jetskis, dinghies, police divers, the LifeFlight rescue helicopter, Polair and the coastguard.

Challenging surf conditions along the coastline from Buddina Beach to Point Cartwright complicated the search operation and reduced visibility.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
