On Saturday, England host Iceland at The City Ground in Nottingham, in the second round of World Cup qualifiers.

In round one earlier this week, The Lionesses won 1-6 against Ukraine, despite a goalless first half. Braces from Alessia Russo, Georgia Stanway, and Jess Park secured their victory.

Meanwhile, Iceland travelled to Spain and lost 3-0 to the current World Cup title holders – they were able to maintain a clean sheet for the first 38 minutes before Barcelona player Clàudia Pina found the back of the net.

This fixture will be the first time the two teams have clashed since July 2009, when England lost at home in a friendly. As they face each other almost 17 years later, this weekend’s game will be a historic clash in a fight for a spot in next summer’s tournament.

England

A new addition to the England squad is London City Lionesses left back Poppy Pattinson who has received her first senior call-up. The 25 year-old earned her first cap earlier this week when she was subbed on against Ukraine in the second half.

England captain Leah Williamson has made her return to the international squad, having missed the previous two camps due to injury. On Tuesday, the centre back made her first start for England since the Euros.

Key absences from the squad include Niamh Charles, Beth Mead, and Ella Toone, all missing due to injuries.

Manchester City players Alex Greenwood and Grace Clinton are both in camp with the Lionesses but did not appear in the match day squad earlier this week. Manager Sarina Weigman has announced that Greenwood will remain unavailable for the upcoming fixture due to a minor muscle injury. As it stands, there is no update on whether Clinton will be in contention for the clash with Iceland.

Iceland

Defender Elín Helena Karlsdóttir and forward Birta Georgsdóttir have both received their first international call ups this year. Both are yet to make their debut, having featured in the squad against Spain but not earning any minutes.

A key absence from Iceland’s squad is left winger Fanndís Frioriksdóttir who announced her retirement at the end of 2025. The 35 year-old earned 110 caps and scored 17 goals for the team, making her final appearance in a 0-2 Nations League loss against France last year.

Iceland – Sveindís Jónsdóttir

The 24 year-old made her first international appearance in 2020 and has since scored 16 goals in 56 caps.
