Car sales in Europe hit record low due to microchips shortage

  1. The 4 horsemen of present day apocalypse:

    * Chips shortage

    * Energy squeeze

    * Inflation

    * COVID

    Currently roaming in Germany like it’s 1631 or something.

  2. Maybe some countries will start investing in cycling lanes and plant more trees for shade (though I doubt it 🙁 there are some countries in EU that only want to tax tax tax AND tax the people … and then put all those taxes in private pockets instead of providing good services 🙁

  3. My parents got really lucky to get a new car in early 2019 they didn’t even bother to pick a “fancy” colour so they can get it faster.

  4. Looks like the EU is seeing state aid:

    >The European Union may approve state aid to fund new semiconductor production in the bloc, its competition chief said on Thursday, while resisting calls by France and others for a no-holds-barred approach to subsidies.

    The US is seeing vertical integration from automakers:

    >The big picture: The ongoing chip shortage has caused so much trouble for the automotive industry that Detroit’s two biggest names have now decided to step into chip development. Although the initial focus is on strengthening ties with existing chipmakers to deal with near-term shortages, Ford looks to eventually improve supply and gain independence with in-house semiconductor development in the future.

    Also, looks like [my earlier guess](https://old.reddit.com/r/europe/comments/qgzwiw/german_auto_makers_cant_build_hundreds_of/hi9fsrr/) that automakers were gonna move away from ASICs as a result of this shortage is correct:

    >Reuss told an investor conference GM is working with seven chip suppliers on three new families of microcontrollers that will reduce the number of unique chips by 95% on future vehicles.
