In yalya this is called pithgyavlin. This is not an instrument that is solely “of Cyprus”. In Turkey, Persia, Pakistan and Turkic countries in Central Asia this is called “Ney”(نِی,Ney/نای,Nāy) but it is a bit thicker from canes instead of reeds. There is also “kaval” played in the balkans, Anatolia and some other countries in the Arabian Peninsula where kaval is called kawala. In yalya we also had a tongued variety of pithgyavlin that old people called “Shallammurin” made from bone.
