Sad to see… Economic policy and education should be #1. That’s what will make this country thrive and become better for the future. We need major changes if we want to become and remain the top of Europe.
Only use social security for those that need it:
– Privatize healthcare for middle and upper class
– Social fraud should be punished by jail time: anyone abusing unemployment benefits or social housing
– Abolish public pensions for middle and upper class: they should be smart enough to get the power to manage their own money
Let those who we can trust to survive on their own (middle and upper class) manage their own money (this also means taxes will decrease for the middle & upper class of course). Government should only step in for those who would probably not survive without our intervention.
That’s one hell of a babyboomer bill.
Completely disregarding the content: De Tijd killed it with these graphics and overviews. So clean.
> Ook de overheid is een grote slokop: 10 miljard wordt verdeeld over de overheidsdiensten Financiën, Binnenlandse Zaken en Buitenlandse Zaken met zijn universum aan ambassades en consulaire diensten, over het politieke bestel met de vele parlementen, regeringen en kabinetten en over het Koninklijk Huis.
This is way worse than I thought. Unitary Belgium anyone? Pretty sure we can cut that number by 3/4.
They ain’t paying for roads, car parks, or police in the streets doing stuff for me as a normal citizen, that I can tell you. Some of the experiences I had were beyond parody. Example: went with the family to a restaurant who also had valet parking so we left them the car keys because hey, like in the movies, right? During dinner someone broke in the restaurant while everyone was there and made off with the “safe” (lol) where the keys were. The police is called, like 10 car keys stolen from the customers, it’s a Saturday night, they don’t arrive for 4 hours. Around 1.30 AM everyone leaves except some poor waiter who had to wait for the police to file the complaint.
A month later I pass by the restaurant to get some news and I leave the car in front with one wheel on a “no parking” painting (there was a empty plot nearby usually used as a car park, which was now closed and with a chain barring the entrance). Almost zero traffic, not bothering literally no one. I go in the restaurant, come out with no news after 30 seconds (just hello hello any news no thank you talk soon). Out in front, a police car. I explain to them why I’m there and I also ask maybe they have news, I originally thought they were there for the investigation or whatever, very naively. Turns out they stopped to give me a fine for wrong parking. I started to laugh, they asked what’s so funny and when I told them it really is like those jokes where the police is never there for a crime but as soon as you’re badly parked they appear, and they started to get all pissy like I owe them respect or whatever. So, I guess taxes in Belgium pay mostly for the entertainment you get when needing government services.
But by all means, let’s keep claiming we need to cut defence spending. We’re spending more on unemployment.
tldr: boomers, it’s the boomers we’re wasting half our tax on
Arbeidsongeschikheids costs are 1/3 of Pensions. 😮, did not expect that.
Very informative, I love these graphic representations

Social security and healthcare are good ways to spend money. I don’t mind my tax money being used to help those who need it, and I absolutely call bullshit on claims that they’re all just leeches — that’s just right-wing propaganda.
The insane amount of money that is spent on keeping the existing bureaucracy in place, though, is a different matter. And with the way things are currently going (confederalism etc) I only see this getting much, much worse…
I’m very surprised by the high cost of onderwijs. Thought that amount was way lower.
One thing I find strange: they report that over 19 years many costs have increased by 40%. But at 2% inflation, you would expect costs to increase 1.02^19 -1 = 45% over 19 years so in real terms these costs have actually gone down, which is not mentioned anywhere at all.

This is a nice overview of where our taxes are being used and the evolution of some parts of those taxes over time.
