Motorists shouted abuse, acted dangerously around group cycling, including children, says Naas Cycling Campaign

    Bullshit

The nine year old then went on to give an impassioned denunciation of western economic policies, attacked the housing crisis, and criticised the government’s policy on vegans, before the whole bus applauded her.

  3. I’ve cycled a fair bit in Ireland having done done it on a regular basis for quite some time and have even cycled the length of the country, and while I know for a fact that there are some absolute mongoloid drivers out there, if it’s true that a lot of motorists and pedestrians were shouting abuse at you then there was probably something particularly egregious and shitty about your cycling.

  4. There needs to be a limit on the size of a cycling group. Groups of 20 cyclists spread over 30 meters is super dangerous. I’ve been stuck behind big groups for miles because it’s so hard to get a good enough stretch to overtake. I’m guessing that was the reason those cyclists got shouted at.

  5. Perhaps it was the size of the group that provoked this particular situation but as a motorist who’s also a regular cyclist with no helmet in normal clothes, on a Dublin Bike in the city centre, I find I get virtually no hassle whereas similarly middle-aged men in “all the gear” seem to get aggro on a semi-regular basis. And I think a lot of the conflict is often all in the motorist’s head.

  6. Its weird that pedestrians were shouting at them.

My guess is they completely blocked the lane so no one could overtake – and from the linked story Naas is completely unsuitable for safe cycling. And so drivers got stuck behind a protest basically. They must have cycled through pedestrian lights as well. Otherwise why would they get shouted at?

You should be able to cycle in your town safely. Naas town needs to sort that out. HGV through the centre of town is a big no from me as well.

  7. Sure what use would a cycling protest be if it didn’t get up motorists’ noses ? Seems to be the ‘raison d’etre’ for most of them.

  8. I blame this on bad RSA safety ad’s that push the notation that cyclists have soul ownership over the roads.

The cause of most road rage on the Irish roads is due to not been able to progress at the speed limit, when it comes to cyclist they are a hazard on roads over 50kmph. I have seen a cycling group of 20+ gobshites cycling up the hard shoulder of the M2 120kmph road.

Making Ireland slower dose not save lives it causes more stress and make drivers take more risks on the road, time for Government to take this into consideration.
