Australians will get to witness something that hasn’t happened in decades this week when Denmark’s King Frederik and Queen Mary arrive on our shores. It’s the first official visit to Australia since Frederik X became King in 2024, but the fourth since they’ve been a couple.
But their trip also marks the first Danish head of state visit to Australia in nearly 40 years and also the first time a reigning Australian-born Queen has ever come here in an official capacity. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said it’s an honour to welcome the pair.
“Denmark and Australia are great friends, and together we are working to build a more sustainable, secure and peaceful future,” he said in a statement.

“This visit is an opportunity to deepen our cooperation across a number of shared interests such as sustainability, renewable energy and innovation.
“Their Majesties, The King and Queen of Denmark, have a very special connection with Australia, and I know Australians will welcome them.”
Frederik and Mary will touch down this Saturday (March 14) and will tour the country for six days, before departing next Thursday (March 19).
Queen Mary was last in Australia in February 2025 in an unofficial capacity, where she was spotted in Hobart.
She also visited in 2024 with her twins, Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent.

What is on the itinerary for Denmark’s King and Queen in Australia?
The government revealed their Majesties will visit the Northern Territory, the ACT, Victoria, and Tasmania, where Queen Mary was born during their whirlwind trip to Australia.
Their engagements will be a mix of business, nature, and cultural events.
According to SBS, traditional owners will welcome the royal couple at Uluru and they’ll watch the sunset over the Aussie landmark with Indigenous elders.

When they arrive at the nation’s capital, they’ll be greeted by a 21-gun salute and will meet with Governor-General Sam Mostyn.
They’ll also get to visit federal parliament while in the ACT.
There will also likely be a glitzy state banquet during their six-day state that will be complete with gorgeous dresses and a tiara.
The royal couple will also get a chance to visit where Queen Mary grew up in Hobart and see her family and friends.
But the King and Queen won’t be alone during their stay.

They’re bringing a delegation of 55 companies from Denmark as the royal couple promote the ‘Partnering for a Green, Secure and Sustainable Tomorrow’ initiative.
“Green transition will be a key focus of the visit,” the Danish royal website said.
“The initiative is intended to promote cooperation in the fields of renewable energy and energy-efficient urban development.
“A strengthened partnership with Australia is particularly important at a time when geopolitical shifts have economic and security implications that link developments in Europe and the Indo-Pacific region.
“Building on the strategic partnership between Australia and Denmark signed in 2023, the state visit aims to enhance cooperation across a broad range of areas, including the green transition and economic security.”
