Vote of no confidence in Boris Johnson to happen today

  1. A vote of confidence in Boris Johnson will be held by Conservative MPs from 18:00 to 20:00 BST

If he loses, he will stand down as prime minister

The vote was triggered after at least 54 Conservative MPs asked for it

But at least 180 Conservative MPs – a majority – will have to vote against him, if he is to leave

The vote follows anger over Sue Gray’s report detailing lockdown rule-breaking in Downing Street

  2. new leader comes in on a clean slate

    ramps up culture wars

    tories win next GE

best bet for labour for him to stay imo

  3. He’s unlikely to be toppled today but it is the beginning of the end for his premiership.

Ultimately he’s lost the confidence of the country and your average Tory backbencher will realise that they’ll get eviscerated at the next election on the question of credibility (he already struggled at the last one but the opposition leader was even less popular).

Be interesting to see which faction of the Tory party wins out in the ensuing ideological battle the party will enter, I imagine some of the more traditional conservatives fancy their odds. ‘Johnsonomics’ is on the left side of the party for some, and generally in some policy areas he’s moved the party in the correct direction (e.g. environment) which many rightward/conservative parties around the world have failed to do.

  4. For anyone that thinks this would be a good thing, think again. This is the Tory modus operandi to retain control. Kick the leader out and start again…but this time with someone the ERG or 1922 Committee can control.

  5. Hope after he is backed today, they can finally move on from Partygate to more important things. Russia needs to be defeated, inflation to be handled. Not a good time to have a leadership void.
