Lisbon often features prominently in various international rankings, whether as the best European destination or one of the top places to live in 2026. But the city of the ‘Seven Hills’ also stands out in other areas, serving as the stage for world sporting records .
On Sunday, March 8, the popular Lisbon Half Marathon once again made a name for itself beyond borders by setting a new world record. What does this mean? Jacob Kiplimo, 25, from Uganda, finished the 21.0975 km race in 57m:20s.
A feat that is not unprecedented

Setting a new world record is a feat that is not within everyone’s reach, but this is not an unprecedented feat in Jacob Kiplimo’s career. According to the newspaper “A Bola,” the Ugandan had already broken the world record in the Lisbon race in 2021, with a time of 57m:31s.
However, in 2024, Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha broke that record in Valencia (Spain), and Jacob Kiplimo has now returned to shine in the Lisbon Half Marathon.
The podiums
With more than 30,000 athletes participating , the 35th edition of the Lisbon Half Marathon was a resounding success. But, in addition to the Ugandan athlete’s outstanding performance, it is worth mentioning that the men’s podium was also taken by Nicholas Kipkorir ( 2nd place with 58m:08s) and Gilbert Kiprotich (3rd place with 58:59 minutes).
In the women’s race, Tsigie Gebreselama won again in Lisbon with a time of 1:04:48, followed by Janet Chepngetich in second place with 1:06:50, and Regina Wambui in third place with 1:07:10.
